Sofala Cottage is an historic rammed earth miners cottage c1873. Edged by national parks and backing onto the Turon River it's the perfect escape for lovers of nature and history, romantics and artists.

Utrymmet

Sofala is situated in the beautiful Turon valley 40km north of Bathurst on the road to Hill End. Approximately 3 hours drive west of Sydney across the Blue Mountains. It is Australia's oldest surviving gold town with a rich artistic history. The landscape is scarred by its past yet remains intensely beautiful. Russell Drysdale and Donald Friend visited the town in 1947. On arrival, Friend described Sofala as a ‘lovely crazy old village - perfect'.

Overseas visitors and local travellers will enjoy exploring the Upper Turon area for reminders of the gold rush days. The village has a genuine atmosphere and authentic charm. When you walk along the main road it's like stepping back in time.

Sofala Cottage is self contained and has its own entry. It is a traditional miner's cottage so the rooms are modest in size. The cottage can accommodate up to 3 guests. The bedroom has a queen size bed with split system air conditioner, a simple eat in kitchen with wood fired heater, hot plates, microwave, slow cooker, skillet, toasted sandwich maker, bar fridge and basic cooking facilities. Living room with work desk and the bathroom has a claw foot bath and toilet. There is also a fold up single bed for an extra person/child that can be set up in the living room if required for short stays(URL HIDDEN)

The cottage is made from rammed earth, a method of construction used in the area during the 1800s. The walls are extremely thick keeping the interior surprisingly cool during the hot Summer months.

There is a wonderful view from the front porch framed by "Nipple Mountain" - a local landmark. The landscape is scattered with the remains of Chinese diggings and an old cemetery sits quietly in the distance. The kangaroos are always present in the landscape and often visit the cottage for a graze or just to rest in the shade of one of the gardens many fruit trees.

The cottage is the perfect retreat for overseas visitors and local travellers who would like to experience a unique part of Australia and its history.

Sofala Cottage welcomes artists from various fields, such as the Visual Arts, Literature, Music and Photography to come and develop ideas, create new work or deepen their existing art practice.

For artists that wish to create work during their stay there is a 6m x 6m metre work shed set up as a studio with easels, pin boards, work tables. There is also a large etching press.

Sofala Cottage is run by artist Louisa Antico.

Its a lovely walk to the village as you follow the winding road that runs alongside the Turon River. And drop into the Western Goldfields Museum and meet the curator Mr Wigglesworth on the way.

If you feel like a swim there's a water hole down the road that's a popular destination during the Summer months. Its approx. 1k down the road in the opposite direction to the village on the river side. Trout fishing is also popular in the area and there are also gold fossicking tours you can book if you're feeling lucky.

What a fantastic place to stay. The ambience of history is all around. The cottage is brilliant, snug and amazing!! A short walk and you're in the centre of Sofala, with its traditional pub serving great beer!! No TV so time to do other things - have a good read, chat or just sit and watch the wildlife. The experience is one not to be missed. We only stayed one night but a longer break would let you explore this historic area better. Great road from Bathurst to Lithgow - stop at the scenic viewing point - Pearson's Lookout??

Louisa's cottage is completely charming and has been looked after and decorated lovingly by Louisa. The garden was beautiful and we spent ages just sitting on the verandah and in the garden looking at the beautiful view and watching the light change on the hill or looking at the stars at night. The cottage is tiny but very comfortable and well equipped and with a lovely bathroom. Louisa was easy to deal with, she had thought of everything and we had total peace and quiet and privacy. The whole experience was an absolute joy and a lovely, romantic stay in lovely Sofala.

This was just the loveliest experience for us! The cottage is a gem and being there with spring in full flight has no equal, blossoms abounded, wisteria drippings, roses a budding and of course, all of Louisa's touches, simply stunning. Thank you to Peter too and of course Ralph at Cafe Sofala who opened his kitchen just for us, organised by our hostess. Sofala is a delight and seems to be a well kept secrets. The secret should be explored and this cottage a must! Would never pass nearby without staying again.

Louisa is an amazing host. She also made sure the fire was up and running before we arrived after our long drive. The cottage itself looks and felt lived-in. It was exactly what we needed!
