Who this is for: While this basement apartment is brand-new everything, our house was built in 1892, so you should appreciate old houses. We have two children and a dog, and you may hear us upstairs, especially in the mornings between 7:15-8 AM when we get ready to leave for the day, and after school from about 5 PM-7 PM. If you're bothered by any noises, feel free to call or text us and we'll fix it, but it'll be easier if you don't require total silence during those times. You'll be most comfortable in this space if you are 6-feet tall or under. It has a clawfoot bathtub, so think about whether you have trouble getting in and out of tubs with sides (might not be a great fit for people with mobility issues). There is keypad lock on the door, so you should be able to type in a four-digit code to operate a lock. The heat during winter comes from electric baseboard heaters, so while we welcome families, if you have a crawler you would need to be mindful of that.
Also, please note that Airbnb gives hosts limited choices for how to list their rentals. The closest choice to what this space is is "entire house", because it is private. It is not a "shared space" because it's not like you will be sleeping on our living room sofa, nor is it an igloo or a cave. There is no way to indicate that this is a private unit in a house without just stating it here.
There is plenty of free on-street parking near the house. There is no daily maid service or 24-hour concierge.
Who this is for: People who want to stay inexpensively in a cozy private basement, who appreciate how much life an old house has seen, who understand what it means to have people living above you, who like funky neighborhoods, and who have a sense of adventure. We will be a good match if you keep in mind that I am a working mother and not a hotel. While I will do everything I can to make your stay as comfortable as possible, you should not expect a hotel. This apartment is perfect for people who are relatively low maintenance and are OK with what comes with living in a basement. If you know that you will walk in expecting a hotel, then you might not be a good fit for this apartment. I am one person and cannot do what a hotel can do, which is why hotels in the area cost three times as much.
You will also be a good match if seeing some trace of my liberal politics won't offend you. Like a yard sign, for example.
Stay with us between late May and early September and you'll have access to our member-only swimming pool, with a 50-meter pool, huge baby pool, sand volleyball, tetherball, foosball, ping pong, 9 gas grills for your use, a kitchen, freezers full of ice cream, live music and food trucks on the weekends. $5 gets you in Mon-Fri and 5 PM, $10 Friday evening-Sunday. So worth it!
We are located 6 miles from the National Mall, 5 miles from the White House, 4 miles from University of Maryland, 10 miles from National Airport (DCA), 35 miles from Dulles International Airport, 27 miles to BWI International Airport, 4.9 miles from Union Station and the Capitol, 14 miles to NIH in Bethesda, 5.9 miles to George Washington University (GWU), 8.5 miles to American University.
Free wireless Internet, private kitchen and bathroom, private entrance, free and easy on-street parking.
Check-in time is 3 PM and checkout time is 12 PM.

We are certainly going to do our best to help you, answer your questions, and meet your needs, but because this is a private unit you do not need to even see us if you don't want to. It's up to you.

We are considering installing something like AppleTV, but there is no television in the space yet. There is wireless, which, in 2016, meets most needs.
Dogs and other species are welcome, but unfortunately cats are not.
There is extra bedding in the wardrobe and in the drawer under the bed.
As mentioned elsewhere in this listing, this is a basement apartment. The tub has a shower, and it is a clawfoot tub, so the tub is about 4 inches off the ground with a J-shaped shower. What that means is that if you are 6 feet tall, the shower head will be roughly at your ear level. If this is a problem for you you should probably not stay here.
Again, this is a basement apartment. If you are in love with silence and you know that you would be miserable in a basement because you might hear people upstairs, then this probably isn't for you. Most guests, if they hear us at all, aren't bothered by hearing us upstairs, but different people are bothered by different things. You can rent a soundproof inner room in a hotel in Washington, DC for three times the price, but this is not that, which is why it costs less. I try to keep ear plugs around for super sound-sensitive guests.
No loud parties and absolutely no smoking of any kind. Please turn the heater, air conditioner, and lights off when you leave for the day. And please recycle. Thanks!

Nonprofit professional living in Washington, DC area. Non-smoker, non-drinker. I am often accompanied by two small children and a handsome fella. I've been a landlord for many years and am a somewhat compulsive cleaner, but am otherwise relaxed, friendly and love helping people.
