The land on the farm itself is made up of hill, grazing and arable. The livestock consists of one hundred sheep the majority being a Horned Blackface Scottish Lanark breed. From April onwards these animals would have lambs at foot. Other farm animals consist of nine breeding cows and calves. The main farming activity from June would be sheep sheering and sheep dipping, cow calving and silage making.
The two farmers of this small beef and sheep farm, are family of the owners but do not live on site. They are two brothers who will be happy to chat about their work or the life of the farm, which has been farmed by the same family now for three generations since the late eighteen hundreds. Again though, please be considerate with this when they are very busy. They both farm part time and work away in other careers the rest of the time.
There will be tractors and farm trailers, perhaps only a few times a day using the same access lane as the farmhouse to access the farm sheds and fields so please bear this in mind from a safety point of view if there are children with you. (Children have been brought up and played happily and safely for many generations here with no mishaps, so please don’t be the first!). The quietness of this area will amaze you.
There is an old Orchard which sadly no longer bears useful fruit and is frequented by the sheep these days. The family history, old and new, has much music and writing and we would love it to continue for you too should you be so inclined.
If you apply general good sense and the appropriate caution in moving around a working farm then you will love the lifestyle of your stay here. Just make yourself at home. Should you come across Toby and Oscar the sheep dogs, they are exuberantly friendly but often clarried in mud. Their enthusiasm and personal hygiene are sometimes not a great combination if you are pristine about your clothes, but a firm word will suffice. If you have anyone in your party who is afraid of dogs then please let us know in advance and they will be kept chained when not out working. They lives in large kennels inside warm sheds and when chained, have access at all times to their bowls and a long run so they can wander to outside whenever they wants.
