Some notes about the city-if you are ready to negotiate the utter chaos that is Varanasi/Benaras be ready to witness the City which in the words of Mark Twain " is older than history, older than tradition, older than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together!" And goes on to say "The Ganges front is the supreme show place of Benaras. Its tall bluffs are solidly caked from water to summit, along a stretch of 3 miles with a splendid jumble of massive and picturesque masonry , a bewildering and beautiful confusion of stone platforms, temples , stair flights, rich and stately palaces -nowhere a break......... And there is movement, motion, human life everywhere and brilliantly costumed- streaming in rainbows up and down the lofty stairways ...... at the river's edge."

The homestay a heritage house is situated in the old city about 1.8 kilometre from the nearest Ghat (Panchganga Ghat -which is around 20-25 minutes walk from our place or 5 mins by tuk tuk to Chowk & then a 10 mins walk) to the river Ganges. The location and the ambience are ideal. You can experience peace, tranquility and nature in full bloom in the heart of the city at Nawab Ki Deohri -the palace of the Nawabs- an historic place in its own right. Historic places like Kabir Chaura Math (mutt), where the mediaeval worker saint Kabir lived and preached, is a stone's throw away. Also very nearby is the famous Bara Ganesh temple (150 metres) dedicated to the elephant god. An Interesting place in the neighborhood is the Spice Market (Gola Dina Nath -150 m). After 5 mins of walk you reach the hustle and bustle of Maidagin (tuktuk/auto rickshaw stand -300 metres) from where the way leads to the cremation ghat (Manikarnika ghat-1.9 km), Kashi Vishwanath Temple (the Golden Temple-1 km),the old British buildings - Town hall, Kotwali police station and the General Post Office, Mahamrityunjay (500 metres) & Kalbhairav temples (500 metres) and numerous temples greatly revered by the Hindus. The river Ganges is a 20/25 mins walk ,through the narrow bylanes/alleyways , from our place where you can discover the majestic ghats and palaces on the ghats. The central ghat (Dashashwamedh Ghat) is about 2 kms and can be easily reached by tuk tuk or pedal rickshaw.(all distances are approximate distances from the homestay). LahuraBir (1.5 kms) and Godowliya markets have several restaurants both vegetarian and non vegetarian.
