Boendet
Bath is popular for its Federal, Greek Revival, and Italianate architecture, as a lovely place to spend a few relaxing days, and as the gateway to the picturesque "Downeast" coast, with its rocky coasts, lighthouses, quaint towns, bookstores, and antiquing.

Garden House was built in the Federal style in 1845 by one of Bath's shipbuilders as his family's home.

Gästers tillgång
Guests have the entire second story of the "ell" of the house and they may use the large "sun garden" down below. Access to your rooms is up a staircase from the garden.

Andra saker att notera
We ask that guests call or email us with their expected arrival time in advance (a one-hour range for your arrival time is fine), and also let us know when they will leave (or expect to leave).

Garden House is within walking distance to the Kennebec River, the large town square, the Bath Public Library, and downtown Front Street, home to a wealth of specialty shops, galleries, and fine restaurants (our favorites are J. R. Maxwell, by the open windows, Salt Pine Social, the Kennebec Tavern, right on the river, and Best Thai II - the name says it all).

We like to stroll the tree-lined historic avenues graced by handsome and stately early, mid- and late Victorian mansions and manors--like our own--once home to shipyard owners and ship captains.

Bath's Farmers Market takes place every Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Waterfront Park. The summer concert series takes place on Tuesday & Friday evenings at the central park located at the Patten Free Library, and Saturday evenings in the Waterfront Park. Every third Friday from June to October you can enjoy the fun Art Walk from 5-7 p.m.

On weekends the Montsweag Flea Market, just a few miles up Rt. 9 from Bath, is the place to be for everything imaginable.

Bath continues its shipbuilding tradition as home to the famous Bath Iron Works and the Maine Maritime Museum. Bath also offers the Chocolate Church Arts Center. You can take a guided walking tour of the Bath historic district or ride the delightful Bath Trolley around the scenic streets.

Bath is well situated in the mid-coast region of Maine. The town is flanked by two of Maine's most beautiful sandy beaches: Reid State Park and Popham Beach State Park. Bird watchers can visit the Josephine Newman Wildlife Sanctuary, the Bates-Morse Mountain Conservation Area, Hamilton or Butler's Head Sanctuaries, or Montsweag Preserve; eagles and osprey are frequent visitors to the Kennebec River area.

I am a professor emeritus in music history at the University of Washington who does research on the history of early pianos, musical life in 19th-century Boston, and the life and music of Johannes Brahms. I also serve as Artistic Director of the Kennebec Early Music Festival in Bath, ME, and Musique du Jour Presents! in Seattle, WA. My wife is a concert pianist and a gourmet cook. What a lucky guy I am!
