For those who would like to learn more about San Vincenzo and surroundings:
The sea at San Vincenzo is crystal-clear and bordered by dense pinewoods and thick Mediterranean scrub. The splendid beach, with its fine, gold sand, stretches for many kilometres, alternating fully-equipped bathing establishments with public free beaches. Most of the fully equipped bathing establishments are in the town centre, whereas the longest free beach is inside the park of Rimigliano, a Nature Reserve on the southern side of San Vincenzo’s territory, which forms part of the Val di Cornia Park System.
One of the features of the park is its marvellously unspoilt Mediterranean brush vegetation, traversed by waymarked trails stretching down to a beautiful broad shoreline in a wilderness setting.

The Rimigliano Nature Reserve, with its unspoilt, protected environment, is an inviting oasis of flora and fauna situated right next to the sea - an ideal place for peaceful walks.
Founded in 1973 the Park is one of the coast's most enchanting places. The Rimigliano nature reserve can be described as the most beautiful and evocative place of the San Vincenzo costal area, which will surely linger in the memory of the lucky visitors who had the chance to spend some time by the sea or in the pine forest which leads down to the beach. The park consists of 120 hectares of magnificent pine forest stretching along 6 km of public beach. Sea lilies flower on the sandy shore between San Vincenzo and the Gulf of Baratti, and the dunes are covered in junipers, myrtles and lentisks. Holm-oaks, cork trees and dense pinewoods border the golden, sandy beaches.
Among the animals living in the Park are wild rabbits, weasels and foxes; birds include pheasants and the titmouse.

The European Union's Blue Flag, which is awarded to coastal beaches which have achieved the highest standards in water quality and environmental management, is an important recognition that for years has acknowledged San Vincenzo distinction as a tourist destination. Therefore, San Vincenzo combines natural beauty with the amenities of a welcoming, hospitable resort, making it an international tourist destination where relaxing holidays can be enjoyed all year round.

Besides the sea, San Vincenzo offers the possibility of naturalistic itineraries related to the presence of "Parco di Rimigliano" and the San Carlo hill village. San Carlo has ancient origins that go back to the Paleolithic age. The site of significant mineral deposits, this little hill town surrounded by flourishing Mediterranean scrub on the slopes of Monte Calvi, is a sought-after destination for holidays in close contact with nature and for its holiday farmhouses. One of San Carlo's biggest attractions are the Buche Carsiche, natural pits and caves formed in the Mesozoic age and used in the past for mineral excavation. Today the hamlet, which has about 400 inhabitants, is a dream-like place where time seems to have stood still, immersed as it is in an enchanting landscape of completely unspoilt Mediterranean brush vegetation. Excursions leave from San Carlo along hilly scenic nature trails of various lengths and difficulty.

Walking is synonymous with contact with the earth. Trails and footpaths tell of moments or centuries of slow movement. In an era of “there’s no time”, a simple walk or a challenging hike are the easiest ways to regain the time that does exist, that every day seems to slip from our hands but which, if we want it, is there, firmly under our feet.
The Costa degli Etruschi is an area where total wilderness with the face of impenetrable Mediterranean scrub and the work of man, ancient olive groves or the geometry and harmony of important vineyards, exist side by side. The Etruscan Coast dispels a negative myth that surrounds places where Mother Nature has to reckon with industry. It is enough to take a trip to the San Silvestro Archeo-mineralogical Park, a historic memorial of the mining and processing of mineral ore since the Etruscan era, to understand that industrial activity can also be a key to walking and discovering an area rich with environmental and human testimony and aspects just waiting to be found. And so walking the paths of the Costa degli Etruschi means sharing paths that for centuries were walked by woodsmen, charcoal burners, millers, poachers, poets and shepherds. As well as hiking boots and a map, an open mind to fill with the wide open spaces of this land is also recommended. Near the blue waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea or surrounded by the intense green of the metal-bearing hills, the Mediterranean is always in the air. Whether it’s a libeccio (south-wester), grecale (north-easter) or scirocco (south-easter), at dawn or sunset, in the explosive light of summer or the delicate, hazy light of autumn, the essence of this area gives back to those who move slowly, the joy of discovering places where life is to be lived at a walking pace. And above all, places that help us regain “our” time, in constant movement and in harmony with the sky and the sea.

The development of this kind of tourism, emerged in the last 10 years in the country has integrated the traditional offering of beach tourism with this so called "green holiday" together with nature and landscape values of the area.

San Vincenzo has been inhabited since primordial times. The first evidence of human presence can be traced back to the Upper Paleolithic and the area has been continuously populated throughout the ages. This is probably due to its fortunate position at the foot of the Colline Metallifere range of hills, which allows the territory of San Vincenzo to act as a channel of communication linking the plain of the River Cecina with that of River Cornia. The most ancient phrase in which the place name “San Vincenzo” appears is “Torre di San Vincenzo”, recorded in a 1300 A.D. document and named after the coastal tower which today houses one of the Council offices. The tower was part of a series of fortifications and look-outs scattered along the coast, which were built to defend the beach and the inland villages against pirate attacks. Another two towers, still in existence today, were built in San Vincenzo itself with the same objective: they are both situated on the southern edge of the town, bordering on to the municipality of Piombino: the Torraccia, in Via della Principessa Road, and the Torre Nuova, close to the beach. In the Etruscan age, the strategic importance of San Vincenzo was certainly not underestimated, with its two lateral valleys penetrating some distance inland and creating easy landing places that gave access to the hinterland. Furthermore, the nearby settlement of Populonia, which at the time was a powerful Lucumonia, meant that the surrounding district and the possibility it offered for exploiting the rich mineral deposits and the dense forest cover became highly attractive. Between the IXth and the Vth century B.C. San Vincenzo became an industrial and trading area due to the intense mining activity which was of prime importance for the ancient Etruscans. After the Roman conquest, the famous Aurelian Way was built, and a village sprang up centring around the nearby landing-place. In later centuries, after the barbarian invasions, the Longobards constructed a hill fort, the Castle of Biserno (in the present-day San Carlo quarry), which, with the advent of the Germanic emperors, passed into the domains of the Counts of Gherardesca. In 1304 the Republic of Pisa destroyed the Castle and erected the coastal tower, giving rise to the new San Vincenzo settlement composed fishermen’s huts and farmers’ cottages, complete with a customs office and a jetty for use as a loading stage. In 1406, after the fall of Pisa, the community passed under Florentine rule and became part of the territory of Campiglia. On 17th August 1505 a legendary battle, immortalised in a fresco by Vasari, raged all round the Tower, during which the Florentine troops defeated Bartolomeo D'Alvian, a condottiere leading an army of mercenaries who had come to the aid of the Pisan rebels. After this episode the community of San Vincenzo aligned itself with the fortunes of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, up to the unification of Italy. Subsequently, in the modern era, San Vincenzo belonged to the municipality of Campiglia Marittima until, after the end of the Second World War, it achieved the status of an independent municipality.

Today, it is a modern, efficient town offering a wide variety of holiday accommodation and sports facilities. San Vincenzo is one of the best-equipped resorts of the Costa degli Etruschi, offering the greatest range of hotels and accommodation in the whole of the Val di Cornia. The town centre has a pleasure boat mooring harbour which has recently been enlarged. It is a perfect stopping place for those who enjoy pleasure boating and have been exploring the Tuscan archipelago.

For many years now, San Vincenzo has offered excellent facilities for many types of sport. All water sports - swimming, fishing, scuba diving, sailing, water skiing and windsurfing - can be enjoyed here, as well as tennis, horse riding, hiking, football, bowls and much more. Sports fields, athletics tracks, two sports centres for basketball and volleyball, swimming pools, a velodrome and an airfield, combined with a year- round mild climate, make San Vincenzo an attractive training centre for professional sports teams and an important stage for cycle races.
Costa degli Etruschi has, therefore, something for all cyclists, from children travelling on a child’s seat to touring cyclists who pedal to discover the world, adventurous cyclists looking for tortuous roads and lovers of elegant road bikers. The terrain is perfect for pedaling, where the roads are not measured in kilometers but in emotions. The Costa degli Etruschi and whole Livorno’s province offer itineraries that wind through places where both nature and man’s roots are protected. And then there are food and wine roads ,where flavours carry the scents of the earth and the sea, and noble wines and extra virgin olive oils reflects the nature of the territory.

Fine white fish and oily fish, crustaceans and seafood, the results of the day's catch are the ingredients for the tasty dishes San Vincenzo is renowned for. The restaurants are celebrated by gourmets from around the world and offer not only fresh, flavourful fish dishes but also the products of the land, dressed with excellent extra-virgin olive oil and accompanied by exceptional local wines.
San Vincenzo is crossed by the Costa degli Etruschi Wine Route, where well known winegrowers produce the excellent DOC wines of Val di Cornia, Bolgheri and Montescudaio. Here, the BIO organic culture and its philosophy is growing day by day.
San Vincenzo played an important part in the revival enjoyed by "oily fish". Bonito, anchovy, sardines and tuna are the stars of a number of gastronomic events and are cooked to both traditional recipes and as the basis for original, new dishes.

San Vincenzo, Toscana, Italien

Little out of the house you will easily find bakeries, groceries, delicatessen, bars and a new supermarket. All this really doing 30 steps from the front door.

My advice is to get up slowly, without haste and enjoy a nice day at the beach. You can choose the convenience of the bathhouse in front or opt for the free beach just next door. Taking a few more steps, by sea, you could get to the beach to the south, beyond the "la punta" more natural and far from their house area, with the pine forest behind the bushes sprouting here and there along the sand made of larger and dark grains.
To eat, you will attract many shacks maybe for a fresh insalata and a big ice cream.

In the evening, after a long sunny day, why not order a pizza at home? Or a "apericena" in the many places so called "chic" on the harbor, enjoying music and the return of many yacht from the sea. I suggest the famous and lively "Zanzibar".

Would you rather a quieter evening maybe in the countryside in the middle of the green Tuscan countryside? By car or bus you should reach the small village of San Carlo, an old former mining village. Today is the destination for those who seek relaxation in the hills or the simplicity of authenticity at the many country festivals that are organized here. I also suggest you stop one evening in "Le cave" restaurant, in the main little square of the village, for a dinner that can hardly be forgotten. The dish that I always have is "tortelli (hand made pasta) with wild boar". Fabulous!
