Wow! That’s what will be said when your family pulls up in front of Saltair before even getting out of the car. The garden bursts with color most of the year and the blue front door is a cheerful welcome to a cozy beachside cottage. Walk up to the porch, hear those ocean waves? Aah! Now you are officially in vacation mode!

Walk up to the porch, hear those ocean waves? Aah! Now you are officially in vacation mode! This is the quiet, more spacious end of town where you will see and hear more nature than neighbors. Built in the 1920s and completely remodeled from the studs out less than 15 years ago, you’re stepping into a new house with old charm. The blue and white color scheme throughout with blond wood accents is soothing and the cathedral ceiling and skylights makes it open and roomy. Wireless internet access and basic cable TV are there for those who like to stay in touch.

The parking strip in front of the house holds two cars comfortably, three if bumpers kiss. A renter brought a trailer with a 25’ boat pulled by a Yukon XL and said it fit in the space, by the skin of teeth.

Your kids will immediately run upstairs and claim the sleeping loft for themselves. You’ll be delighted when you check the cabinets in the kitchen. Spices and kitchen basics and good quality pots and pans are plentiful, even the gourmet chef of the family will be pleased. And the extras will make you smile, too. Blender to make Tillamook ice cream milkshakes? Check! Espresso machine? Check! Forks for roasting marshmallows at the patio Chimenea? Crab crackers? Oyster shuckers? Sharp knives? Check, check and check! The house holds 8 people, four in the sleeping loft with twin mattresses, and two bedrooms for couples in queen beds downstairs. The renters say having two bathrooms is a definite A plus! Your kids will find beach toys and kites. Games and puzzles are under the window seat and many current and favorite DVDs at the basic cable TV. Have a toddler? A drawer full of socket protectors and a safety gate are here for you and the four mattresses in the sleeping loft are easy access beds for the little ones. The loft window has a safety guard.

Winter: Gale winds might blow but the house is sturdy and as tight as a drum. Go on, brave the weather to walk on the beach then throw your wet clothes in the washer and dryer while you shower in one of the two bathrooms. Take an afternoon trip on Highway 101 and catch a glimpse of the whale migration at the vista points. Cozy up in the window seat with a good book and watch the tall fir trees in the distance dance in the wind. Open the doors under the window seat to find jigsaw puzzles, and all types of family games. Santa finds this house at Christmas, too!

Spring: What will be popping up in the garden next? What will the next hour bring in terms of weather? You’ll get it all in any given day, except snow and ice. Get out the kite and go up the beach to mingle with the professionals while they fly their big guys at the annual Kite festival. Do a bonfire on the beach and grab the marshmallows and get roasting.

Summer: You have seen Norman Rockwell paintings. Well there is a connection when you think of the small town Fourth of July parade and fireworks held here in town. Hear that steam engine train whistle? Yes, this is the real thing, take your family for a ride on the train and go along the bay to past jutting rocks and fishing boats at the mouth of the jetty to Garibaldi and back. The garden is bursting with color and hummingbirds love the fuchsias. How many butterflies do you see?

Fall: Here’s a secret many vacationers don’t know. Some of the mildest and most beautiful sunny weather can happen in September and October at the Oregon Coast. If you have never been to the coast during these months, you are missing out! Get your Netarts oysters from the docks in Garibaldi and smoke them on the barbecue for a wonderful appetizer before your crab feast. Drop another log on the fire in the chimenea and feel how the stone patio keeps you toasty in the cooling night air. Your family tradition should be Thanksgiving at the beach! Watch the game on the cable TV while the turkey is cooking in the oven.

Gästers tillgång
You have access to the full house, garden and beach. Our beach path is just one hundred seventy five steps from front porch to the sand. Sometimes the closest beach access has larger drops due to the winter storms, but the next entrance is just a half block south so you can always get to the sandy beach.

Andra saker att notera
Need a break from the beach? If you can tear yourself away from Saltair, hop in the car and go see the nearby sights. Take a short drive south to the docks of Garibaldi and buy your crab or fish dinner directly from the day's catch of the local fishermen. The artists' community of Cannon Beach is also a popular day trip from the house. Browse the antique malls in Wheeler. Rockaway Beach has some too! Take a hike in Nehalem Bay State Park. Or, stay right in the neighborhood, nature walks don’t even need a car. We have a 45.6-acre Old-Growth Cedar Wetlands Preserve is just across 101. Walk up Washington Street to 101 and into the Preserve paths to see the gentle giant: a 900 year old Cedar tree. A drive north on Highway 101 leads to breath-taking views of the ocean, state parks with paths back down to the beach and coastal towns with fun shopping. Going south, a short drive will take you through fishing towns and farmland. Visit the lighthouse at Cape Meares, or the Tillamook Cheese Factory. Fudge! Ice Cream! Cheese Curds! 12 miles south from Saltair is the Latimer Quilt and Textile Center; a must see for weavers, knitters and quilters, with changing exhibits and locally made gifts.

Rockaway Beach, Oregon, USA

Enter the beach at the paved access path across the street where you walk under a canopy of trees that opens up to the seven mile stretch of a sparsely populated beach. After a restful night in beds made with quality linens, take your cup of coffee and crossword out to the bench at the end of the path and say good morning to the Twin Rocks rising majestically out of the waves.

I am the Saltair Manager and co-owner of the house with my mother, Janice. We bought the house from a local builder who took a dilapidated beach house built in 1920 down to the studs, gave it a foundation, and raised the roof for the second floor. Everything had been replaced, wiring, plumbing windows. The garage was turned into the second bathroom and bedroom. I was a Portlander since 1977 and found Rockaway Beach to be just delightful! I would rent in the town for ten or so years one weekend month in the stormy winter months, and once stayed in a friend of a friend’s house three doors north. I walked to the beach past a old falling-down house and said wow, that would be fun to fix up and own. Well, it didn’t happen but when my mom and I searched years later for beach property I remembered the area and that the beach path which was dedicated to remain a county park, so we would never lose our walk to the beach due to any private buildings going up. I was also glad of the accessible paved path. Wasn’t it a surprise to me when I got a letter from an older lady telling me about her family’s summers at the house. When she attached an old picture of what the house looked like then, I realized I had bought that old house I passed twenty years ago, dreaming about owning! I left Portland after 37 years to take care of my mother full time in Chicago. We love the house and hope you do too.
