WHAT TO BRING
Groceries: Your stay at Laughing Heart Lodge includes a complimentary continental breakfast. Hot Springs has a Dollar General and one small convenience store, the Hillbilly Market. The local hiking store, Bluff Mountain Outfitters, has a small food section with health/natural foods, cheeses, and meats. Marshall, 30-minutes away, has two grocery stores and one small but decently stocked natural foods shop. In Asheville (1-hour drive) a large selection of grocery and natural foods shops exist. The Lodge provides basic things like spices, coffee, and tea. You are welcome to use the small refrigerator and microwave in our Dining Room. If you are not arriving with your own vehicle, please plan on arranging for your shuttle driver to stop at a grocery store on your way to the Lodge. If you will be staying for several days or weeks, we have staff and neighbors who head into nearby towns and often are happy to bring along a guest for a grocery trip. We don't have scheduled days for town trips.
Linens: We provide all linens for each guest. We do not refresh linens daily if you are staying multiple nights, but rather every three days. If extra linen is desired, please let us know. Extra blankets are in the bottom drawer of the dresser in your room.
Gasoline: Make sure you fill up your gas tank before arriving in Hot Springs. Gasoline costs more out here and the local station is only sporadically open!
WHAT TO DO DURING YOUR STAY
Activities: Relaxation and outdoor exploration are the order of the day. Relaxing in our circa 1896 Lodge is a great way to wind down to mountain mode. The Spring and Fall can be quite cool, so layers of clothing are recommended. The changing forests bring explosions of colors and the view from our front porch and extensive lawns are excellent. Late Spring brings a lightening bug extravaganza to our front lawns. Winter brings light snow and cold temperatures, but we do have lovely fireplaces in both the Library and Parlor, and the Hot Springs Mineral Spas are only ¼ mile away. Summer is perfect for rafting and kayaking on the French Broad River and short hikes or bike rides on our many local trails. The world-famous Appalachian Trail borders our southern property line and goes right through the heart of town. The Pisgah National Forest is our western property line and we have an outdoor firepit and meditation labyrinth for your relaxation or small ceremonies.
Dining and Nightlife: There are several local restaurants to choose from in Hot Springs and a few have live music on the weekends. Our favorites are the Smokey Mountain Diner, Spring Creek Tavern, and Iron Horse Station. The town hosts several annual festivals - April brings the Appalachian Trail Conservancy’s TrailFest, May is the French Broad River Festival, June is the Bluff Mountain Festival, and July is the Wild Goose Festival. Please check various music calendars.
