Amakaya Backpackers is a hostel with dorms and separate private rooms in a nice part of the town close to the shopping area of the Plettenberg Bay (Plett.) I didn't meet the host himself (the owner of the hostel but talked to him over email extensively, more on that later.) The s…

Hello Nikhil Thanks for your comments, however I wish to make a few comments of my own. 1. You do not mention that your first money 'loss' was at Face Adrenalin the Bungy operator. You insisted that one of their staff removed money from your bag while it was in their care. The manager, on my request, viewed the video footage of the area where your bag was left and there is no evidence in the video of their staff or anyone else having accessed or tampered with your bag while it was in their care. According to their manager they could see you access your bag to pay after the jump. I know that you paid by card and not cash. 2. I have viewed our camera footage and cannot determine if anyone entered your room at any time that you were not there from the footage we have. My last correspondence with you was on 2 May in which you thanked me for looking into this matter - yet you say you did not hear anything back from me? 3. It is necessary to have the override key available as guests sometimes leave the safes locked when they leave and the staff need to open it for the next guest so they can programme their own code. For the safes that still operate with a key, the spare keys are at my home which is 10km away, so staff do not have access to a spare key. We have never had in incident where a staff member has entered a guests room and stolen anything out of a room safe. It would be rather brazen of someone to do that as such an incident would usually be traceable to time and shift worked (which is recorded in an attendance register), so would be relatively easy to determine who worked a the time. The people on duty at the time was our Manager who has been with us for over 3 years and another staff member who has been with us for over a year and our cleaner who has been with us for 2 years. While not impossible, I seriously doubt that any of them would be silly enough to steal while they are at work. In many cases they have actually found things that guests have left behind and in fact contacted the guest to tell them of this. Theft is a dismissable offence at Amakaya. 4. So from our side I cannot determine if someone did in fact enter the room, however have to doubt the incident as it is too co-incidental that on the same day you had money go missing at both Bungy and Amakaya. Maybe it was only a miscalculation on your side? I will however make some changes to ensure that the chances of such an incident is reduced. Regarding your other 'cons': 1) Location - we are 300m from Main Street - please do not confuse getting around town with accessing areas out of town. The mini bus taxis - they only travel to out of town areas when they have enough passengers to cover the cost of the trip. There are also shuttle services available who also need to cover costs. The wait for them is usually only a few minutes. Usually they have a fixed price to an area, so if more are travelling the cost per person reduces. 2) Safety - an apparent theft does not mean the hostel is not safe but rather that perhaps there is a thief around - it does not mean that the guest as a person is not safe - maybe you should highlighted a possible security risk as opposed to safety. So in summary, as you can perhaps understand, it too co-incidental to me that you have 2 thefts of money at 2 different locations on the same day. I cannot determine on our video footage that someone entered your room but based on past experience believe it is highly unlikely. I will however look at tightening up on the security issue where access to the room safes are concerned to prevent such an incident from occurring. Other than your 'bad' experiences in Plett, I hope that you had a pleasant holiday in South Africa. Regards Dave Swart
