The peaceful farmhouse is little changed since the 17th century, when it was built in a beautiful corner of Monmouthshire. Bedrooms have lovely views, ancient beams and comfortable beds; organic breakfast is in the big converted cider house kitchen.
This is my home where occasional B & B guests are welcome to use one or more of the four comfortable spare bedrooms. I don't rent out the whole house, but you are welcome to stay for bed and breakfast in the 2 double rooms, one twin and one small single.
Upper Red House is little changed since it was built around 1650. It stands in a quiet and beautiful corner of the Welsh countryside, surrounded by our organic farm. A listed (Grade II*) Historic building, it has original oak timbers and flagstone floors; and great views from all the rooms. It's an interesting house with a peaceful and friendly feel - some even say magical.
The house was derelict for 30 years until 1995 when we came here (and won an award for its 'sensitive restoration'). Now it has some modern comforts, but still feels and looks like an old building.
The farmhouse overlooks and is surrounded by our organic farm. Wildlife flourishes in the ponds and flowery meadows, thanks to management without pesticides and to our conservation work. We do all we can to preserve and encourage the birds, bees and bugs which we love - and need.
There are a few pubs and restaurants nearby for evening meals. (Some are well-known so you might need to book.) Sometimes walkers can get a lift to the pub, or they bring a picnic to eat here in the evening.
Visitors are given a generous vegetarian breakfast in the large kitchen, converted from the old cider house. Eggs, honey, fruit and jams come from the farm, and where possible everything is organic. There is free Wifi, no TV, no air fresheners (or other smelly potions), plenty of hot water, and a big log fire in the winter.
I enjoy meeting people and - if they wish - showing them round the farm. Visitors always say how much they enjoy staying here. It's quite unlike anywhere else!
Bookings at short notice are usually difficult. Please book as far ahead as possible.
Children and pets are welcome but only by prior agreement and pets are not allowed in the bedrooms.
Bedrooms (large and comfortable) are 2 double, 1 twin and 1 (small) single
Bed and breakfast only. There's lots to do and explore in the area and we ask you to be away from the house in the daytime (10.00am to 4.30pm).
You have use of your bedroom, bathroom, free wi-fi, breakfast in the big kitchen - and the grounds, surrounding farmland and woods. I don't share the living room with guests - it's where I work.

I'm pleased to meet people, answer questions, give them lots of breakfast and help with local information, - but I'm busy all the time with a house, farm and much else to look after. I do part-time B&B, and you are very welcome to stay, but please understand it's still a private house. Some people expect a kind of hotel...which it isn't! You are offered the same as my friends and family and so far everyone seems to like it.

Upper Red House is at the end of a small road. Shops are 15 minutes drive away, so you may want to pick up anything you need before you arrive.
Absolutely no smoking or stilettos in the house please!!
Please arrive after 4.30pm and leave each day by about 10am - unless we arrange otherwise beforehand.
Important: please give expected arrival time at least 24 hours before and update us if it changes (or there may be no-one to let you in!)
Pets OK if pre-booked, but not allowed in the bedrooms.
Children (usually over 10) welcome but please be aware this is an old, unusual house without handrails or stairgates. Children are fine, but parents sometimes worry.
I live here and run the organic farm, trying hard to preserve and encourage wildlife and to run a "green" household. Climate change is happening and we need to reduce the damage as much as we can. I like books, music, dance, travel, etc and there are never enough hours in the day
I'm always busy running the farm (and a lot else) so I need as much notice as possible if you try to book. I will look after you for bed and breakfast: you get a comfy bed in a lovely old farmhouse (4 bedrooms sleeping up to 7) and plenty of vegetarian breakfast in the morning. No frills. You get the same as my friends and family - and me.
I ask guests to be away from the house 10am to 4,30pm - there's plenty to see and do in the area and I can lend you all the maps and info you need.
I value privacy, (yours and mine) so if you want to know more, come and meet me here! I look forward to it.
