The Cotswolds are characterised by attractive small towns and villages, built of the underlying Cotswold stone (a yellow oolitic limestone). In the Middle Ages the wool trade made the Cotswolds prosperous and some of this money was put into the building of churches, leaving the area with a number of large handsome Cotswold stone "wool churches". Encircled by five sweeping valleys opening out to the River Severn and made famous by Laurie Lee's novel "Cider with Rosie", the scenery is dramatic around Stroud. The town and its surrounding villages provide a great base from which to explore the undiscovered south Cotswolds, as well as for day trips to Bristol and Bath. London is just a 90 minute direct train away. At a time when the prevalence of chain stores has turned many of Britain's High Streets into copies of each other, Stroud is a welcome relief. With a bohemian vibe and an enviable array of independent shops, Stroud offers a unique shopping experience unrivalled by any town or city in the locality. Brimming with character and standing amidst the dramatic backdrop of the Five Valleys, Stroud has an eclectic mix of shops in the most beautiful of settings. The award-winning Farmers' Market is held each Saturday and is one of the best in the country, described by Jasper Conran as "the Covent Garden of the Cotswolds". Throughout the summer months, street performers will entertain you every Saturday morning and there is a full programme of music and theatre throughout the year – a true hub of cultural events. Stroud is a place that repays investigation, especially for the quality and variety of artists at work in the area – you could also choose to take part in one of the many traditional workshops! Food & Drink Stroud has numerous places to eat and drink, with a range of cuisines and prices to suit all tastes and budgets. The list below is a small sample of the range of options available: JRooL Bistro (www.jrool.co.uk): JRooL Bistro is a fine example of the sum of its parts being greater than the whole. The team has a passion for food and wine, such that the end result is an experience of food, wine and service that is, simply, award winning. The flexibility of the dining room encourages leisurely family lunches, business dining, appetisers and drinks at the bar, pre-theatre dinners or a full gastronomic experience; No 23 Bar & Bistro: No 23 is a popular, independent Stroud Bar, Café and Restaurant, specialising in tapas and Mediterranean fare. The fully stocked bar serves choice wines, beers and aperitifs to complement the extensive menu; Sorrento Italian Restaurant (www.sorrentostroud.co.uk): The menu offers superb presentations of traditional favourites, such as pizzas, pasta, succulent steaks, chicken and fish dishes, all served in a relaxing, friendly environment. Stroud also has a wide range of food retailers, including an award winning Farmers' Market, held every Saturday.

Minchinhampton is a very attractive, thriving hilltop town, situated on a tongue of high land between the Golden Valley and the Nailsworth Valley, 1.5 miles north east of Nailsworth. The town also sits on the eastern fringes of Minchinhampton Common, high above the valleys that were once prosperous with the production of cloth. The centre of Minchinhampton is a picture-postcard image of what people expect of a small Cotswold town, with a selection of nice shops and places to eat. The town is centred on its High Street and old Market Square, the main feature of which is the late 17th century Market House, supported on stone columns. The interesting Holy Trinity Church dates from the 12th century and has a truncated spire looking over the Market Square. The church was given to Caen's Abbaye aux Dames by William the Conqueror and then in 1415 passed to Syon Abbey, in whose hands it remained until the Dissolution. Minchinhampton Common is a large area of open grassland with spectacular views over the Stroud and Nailsworth valleys. The area is owned by National Trust and is an important archaeological landscape, with prehistoric field systems, burial mounds and the remains of a defensive earthwork, known as The Bulwarks. In the summer the Commons are grazed by local commoners' cattle. The area covers 635 acres and is renowned for its colourful array of wild flowers and butterflies. Food & Drink For a small market town, Minchinhampton is fortunate to be blessed with a number of good places to eat and drink: The Crown Inn (https://www.thecrown-minchinhampton.com/): Roaring fires, a restaurant serving up locally inspired flavours, and a cellar stocked full of craft ales, fine wines, and fizz - when it comes to Cotswold country pubs, The Crown Inn is the perfect place to meet, eat, and make great memories. The Ragged Cot (www.theraggedcot.co.uk): Perched high on the Cotswolds outside the ancient market town of Minchinhampton sits the Ragged Cot, a country inn getaway created for serious pleasure seekers. Born of a 17th century coaching house inn set beside six hundred acres of National Trust common land the Ragged Cot is a pretty special place with an intriguing history of highwaymen and pilferage. The proprietors of the Ragged Cot take pride in their professional approach to food and service, with the seasonal menu offering great British food sourced from local farmers and even their own vegetable garden. With dishes such as seared ox tongue with pickled red cabbage, pheasant with braised leeks and artichoke puree or just simply ham, eggs with triple cooked chips you will always find a dish to fit; The Kitchen (www.thekitchenminchinhampton.co.uk): Choose a seat by the beautiful bay window and watch for riders trotting by on horseback or perhaps the occasional herd of cows strolling down from the Common. Serving delicious breakfasts, morning and afternoon teas, and lunches, all the locally sourced food is prepared fresh daily; The Old Lodge, Minchinhampton Common (www.food-club.com/old-lodge.htm): The Old Lodge is beautifully located in the centre of Minchinhampton Common. With unrivalled views of the Cotswolds, this 400 year old hunting lodge is the perfect place to escape the rush. Enjoy quality, locally sourced food served in the restaurant, the bar area, one of the smaller dining rooms or al fresco in the spacious garden. The stunning restaurant accommodates parties of up to 85 people seated and has floor to ceiling windows that look directly onto Minchinhampton Common. Minchinhampton also has an excellent butcher's shop and an organic cheese shop: L Taylor & Sons (www.taylorsminchinhampton.com): For nearly a century L Taylor and Sons has been supplying the highest quality meat to discerning customers. The quality of the shop has been recognised with a Cotswold Life Butcher of the year award; Woefuldane Organic Dairy (www.woefuldanedairy.co.uk): All the products are made by hand in the farm dairy in time honoured ways. The unpasteurised cheeses change throughout the seasons as the milk varies depending on what the cows are eating.

Sunny, double room in a tall Victorian end of terrace. Perfect for those who want a cosy base right in the centre of Stroud. Breakfast is 'help yourself'. In a big busy, friendly, family, cosy home, with kids, 2 lodgers, cats and fish. Warm welcome assured
Small sunny double bedroom This room on the 3rd floor contains a 4ft 6" double bed, bedside shelves, a hanging rail, a corner desk with lamp and a stool. There is an eco radiator or fan depending on time of year. The shared bathroom is a half landing away with a bath, electric shower, loo and sink. There's another loo next door to the bathroom too. A breakfast of tea/coffee, cereal, toast and fruit juice is included in the price if you stay less than a week (you help yourself). If you're here longer then please provide your own food (our generous discount reflects this). You are welcome to use the kitchen for cooking. We have WIFI which you are welcome to use. The house is a large family and shared 'end of terrace Victorian' home. Its a mixture of classic, contemporary and growing children style. We have 3 cats, lots of fish, several children/young adults and lodgers. The house is by no means 'perfect' - guests can expect a clean and tidy room, with the rest of the house cleaned professionally weekly and kitchen/bathrooms attended to more often. We pride ourselves on a warm relaxed atmosphere for both family and guests which doesn't equate to minimalist immaculate surroundings. Please note there are lots of stairs, so the kitchen is in the basement and the bedroom is 3 floors above.. We're right in central Stroud, minutes from the station and all the shops and restaurants. Parking is available behind the house or on street in front of the house (visitors permit needed except in the evenings and on Sundays). We look forward to welcoming you to our home.
Stroud is an 'alternative' town with interesting shops and cafes, alongside some of the usual high street shops. The countryside round about is particularly lovely and there are many walks that can be done from the house. We're ideally placed for the award winning Saturday farmers market, Stroud Subscription Rooms, Centre of Arts and Science and Lansdown Hall (all within 3-7 minutes walk).

The area remains affluent, which has encouraged the establishment of many high quality pubs, restaurants and antique shops.

The Loft at The Retreat is a lovely unique and OFF GRID space in a stunning location. If you're not put off by it's low ceiling and minimal electricity (we use solar power for lighting/phone charging and have a portable DVD player which guests can use) Our shower is an outdoor shower with hot water and the toilet is a compost loo. The kitchen is a basic outdoor set up and guests are welcome to dine at our Viking inspired long table. Guests are also welcome to use our pizza oven and BBQ.
Whether it's Roman Cirencester or Bohemian Stroud, riding stables or glider experiences, quiet walks or just a chance to escape that you're after, there's something for everyone here. The loft is on our campsite which can site 6 tents so you may end up sharing the site with other people and dogs. We don't allow children under 12 and sorry no dogs allowed in the loft. There is a train track which runs along side our site so please expect to hear the sound of trains every so often.
We are situated between two fantastic typical country pubs so if you fancy locally sourced food and beer it's just a short walk along farm tracks and along an old canal path. The village shop is a 30 minute stroll through fields with stunning views (it doesn't take everyone as long but the views can be distracting) Carry a camera at ALL times and if you're anything like me a memory card to help store all the photos I'm sure you will take. The wildlife/valley/weather all create the most amazing photographs. Don't forget to make time for a trip to the Winstone's ice cream factory, a tiny ice cream shop in the middle of the common.

Any visitor to Stroud really needs to visit the Farmers Market on Saturday morning for takeaway food/ food stalls. Its been voted the best local market in the UK. Stroud is very much the country version of alternative places such as Camden or Shoreditch- it’s a quirky, quixotic, bohemian town with very strong community roots and local free trade shops including art and vintage shops. It has a HUGE amount of artists living in and around the environs. It was voted as one of Britains best places to live in a recent Sunday times article. Stroud is indeed, incredibly special and definitely embodies the hidden bohemian more authentic experience of the Cotswolds. There are always festivals or events, from literature, art to theatre taking place throughout the year. The many mills are part of Stroud’s Industrial Past and house a bustle of workspace sharing co-operatives, artists studios, vintage shops, upholstery and jewellery making workshops. Many guests visit to take part in these workshops to experience this rich arts and crafts heritage. A short 10 minute walk from the house is a wonderfully authentic real ale typically British pub called ‘The Crown and Sceptre’- call in for a great Sunday roast. Other notable nearby establishments to visit are The Subscription Rooms, Giffords Circus, Westonbirt Arboretum, Stroud Valley Artspace, Pangolin Gallery, Hawkwood College (for workshops). Minchinhampton Common is a beautiful common ground area where cattle roam freely across the roads and amongst golfers There are many walks right from the doorway of the house. The Heavens is one beautiful area to explore as is the Stroud micro Brewery Walks to Rodborough Common across the Valley with great views of the river Severn and Wales and a visit to Winstones Ice Cream factory is a must. The Cotswold Way is near by, as are walks to Slad to visit the Woolpack, frequented by the famous author Laurie Lee. For those requiring a flatter walk – take in the beautifully restored Cotswold Canals with access from the towpath to unique pubs and cafes. Painswick, the queen of the Cotswolds, Tetbury, Cirencester, Cheltenham, Bath and Bristol are also definitely worth a visit and are all within easy driving distance from Stroud.

Staying at Demeter gives you private and independent accommodation in a cosy self-contained detached garden annexe, which is situated in a small village in the delightful Cotswold countryside. Provisions for a continental and/or English style breakfast are provided for the first night as experience shows that longer stay guests prefer to cater for themselves. Well-behaved dogs are welcome.
Situated in the garden of the main house, the annexe was originally built as a 'granny flat' and, therefore, is particularly well adapted for elderly and/or people with impaired mobility. It is completely self-contained, well-appointed, warm and cosy; with an option to use the futon in the lounge as a single sofa bed. A travel cot (<2 years old) is available.
Situated so near Cirencester, we are ideally positioned as a central base for touring around either the northern or southern Cotswolds, attending events like Cheltenham's Literary Festival, Badminton's Horse Trials or Gloucester's Three Choirs Festival. However, if you just want a relaxing break from everyday life, cycling or walking ( with or without a dog), there are great routes from the village on the easy footpaths or bridle ways, and every chance of seeing an abundance of wildlife, especially watching the buzzards, kites or deer.

This beautiful, private space will give you the best of both worlds. It’s conveniently located from Stroud town centre with great transport connections, and yet once you enter the garden here you’ll be in a peaceful retreat, surrounded by nature. The little hut is set in our large garden, and overlooks the beautiful Slad Valley. We also have another little hut and a larger cabin and shepherd's hut - these can be found in separate listings.
The little hut is insulated and has a single bed and bedside table, with lamps and a heater to keep you warm. The hut itself is away from the Wifi signal (although you do get phone signal on most networks and 3G) but there is high-speed Wifi in the conservatory. The conservatory is a beautiful, light space where you can sit and relax any time - make yourself a cuppa, listen to the birds or get some work done. Breakfast will also be served in the conservatory at whatever time you’re ready - you don’t need to wake up at a specific time or tell us when you want to eat. We’ll leave homemade bread, tea and coffee etc. for you so that you can help yourself. The bathroom you’ll use is just next to the conservatory by the house. The bathroom has a toilet, shower and sink. It is an out-building rather than part of the house, so there’s a heater that can be turned on to keep it cosy. It’s a short walk up the garden from the hut so be aware that your shower won’t be right next to your sleeping space, it’s actually just next to the conservatory. There’s a beautiful meditation room, which you’re welcome to use.
We are situated at the edge of Stroud, just as the town thins out towards the Slad Valley. Our house is detached and is on a friendly, quiet street with the valley on one side and the woods to the back. There is parking on our private driveway or free parking on the street. You can walk out the front door and just a few minutes walk along our road will take you down a country lane. There are lovely beech woods within a few minutes walk and you can take a longer walk (30 mins +) to the stunning Swifts Hill or to the Woolpack Pub (a local favourite made famous by the Laurie Lee novel ‘Cider with Rosie’). There are plenty of other things to explore, as we’re just a 15-20 minute walk from Stroud town centre, or a short drive from the train station (1.5 hours direct train to London). You can visit the award-winning local farmers market, go to the local pubs (knowing you’re in walking distance!), or go to any of the regular and eclectic cultural events that go on in Stroud. You may want to be here as a springboard to explore Stroud and the surrounding villages, or perhaps you’d rather close the door and use your stay here as more of a retreat - either way is fine, or perhaps a bit of both!

Stylish Shepherds Cabin in the heart of the Cotswolds. Free-standing full sized bath, king size bed, two seater sofa and great views. This is as good as camping in the woods gets, no electricity but hot water, plenty of candles and gas to cook on.
This romantic getaway has all you need for a weekend away or a short break. Less than 2 hours from London and an hour from Bristol the Shepherds Cabin is in the heart of the Cotswolds. At the head of the Slad valley, made famous by Laurie Lee's books, especially Cider with Rosie, this idyllic part of the world has changed little since his time. The walk to the Woolpack pub takes an hour and a half and takes you through an unspoilt valley with no houses or humans for the first hour. Or you can drive in 7 minutes. The cabin has hot and cold running water, NO ELECTRICITY, but plenty of candles and torches.
The Cotswolds are an internationally recognised Area of Outstanding Beauty and we are in the middle of it. Just a short walk from The Shepherd's Cabin is at the top of the Slad Valley, made famous in the book Cider with Rosie by Laurie Lee and explorable via a network of well maintained and signposted paths and tracks. The Gloucestershire wildlife trust has marked a set of paths and routes to celebrate the centenary of the famous writer's birth and most importantly the valley leads you down hill all the way to the Laurie's local pub; The Woolpack. A local institution, The Woolpack is a fantastic local pub in the traditional sense. Good food, great beer, quality locals and the odd fiddly diddly band to get things going. Stroud Farmer's Market is regularly recognised as the best in the country and is open every Saturday from 9-2. It is well worth a visit for some great local produce.

Tranquil environment, 20 minutes walk from the town centre. As Stroud is fairly hilly, this is mainly uphill, for those who are daunted by such a prospect. There are also lovely walks just across the way and further afield. Beautiful views. And the walk back into town is downhill all the way.. There are various good walks locally in the Cotswolds. Beautiful views of the local environment from the garden out front Non-smoking, Alcohol free. This is a real haven and retreat from a busy world
The environment is quiet and attractive. It is a small apartment, but spacious. It is particularly enjoyed by people who are looking for a retreat and some peace after a busy day. Breakfast is organic, special requests considered.
There is a wonderful view towards the cemetery and The Heavens, beautiful sunsets and lovely walks can be taken there. There are also a few gardens one can enjoy while here.

Quiet, secluded location very close to the centre of Stroud. 5 minutes walk to railway station with links to Cheltenham, Bath, Bristol, London. Many interesting cafes, restaurants and pubs are within easy walking distance in addition to a major supermarket and a local convenience store. Not to be missed is the Saturday Farmers' Market, the first of its kind in Britain and only a few minutes walk away. We enjoy meeting people from all over the world as we ourselves are well travelled.
The double bedroom is on the first floor of our split level, modern detached property and is situated next to the bathroom which is yours to use exclusively. If there are 3 people travelling together ( 3 adults or 2 adults and a child over 5) then we are happy to make a second single room available at an additional cost. This is next to the double room and you would all have use of the same bathroom. There are beautiful views from both rooms along one of Stroud's Five Valleys and across to Rodborough Fort which is situated on the edge of National Trust common land. The bed is suitable for one or two adults. We can also accommodate a baby of up to eighteen months in a travel cot in the same room. Tea and coffee making facilities are in the room. We are a non-smoking household. Breakfast is provided in the form of tea, coffee, orange juice, cereals, fruit, yoghurt, home-made muffins and bread etc. Advance notice of any allergies is required.
As well as being close to the town centre we are also a 5 minute walk from the beautifully restored Cotswold Canals. The towpath gives you access to a variety of unique pubs and cafes.

We are an off grid campsite surrounded by stunning countryside and woodlands. This tent is a 4 man tent but we limit guests to 2. Things are extremely basic here, no towels or electricity provided. Think wild camping; camp beds, sleeping bags and inflatable pillows. Our shower is an outdoor shower with hot water and the toilet is a compost loo. The kitchen is a basic outdoor set up and guests are welcome to dine at our Viking inspired long table. Guests are also welcome to use our BBQ.

Lorry Lee is a stylish conversion of an old fashioned 7.5 ton horse box, in the heart of the Cotswolds. Free-standing full sized bath, king size bed, and great views. This is as good as camping in the woods gets, no electricity but hot water, plenty of candles and gas to cook on.
This romantic getaway has all you need for a weekend away or a short break. Less than 2 hours from London and an hour from Bristol. Lorry Lee is in the heart of the Cotswolds.
Just a short walk from Lorry Lee is the top of the Slad Valley, made famous in the book Cider with Rosie by Laurie Lee and explorable via a network of well maintained and signposted paths and tracks.

Take your first glimpse of the rolling fields surrounding our traditional Cotswold stone farmstead, as you travel along our private, tree lined drive. In an AONB, the farmstead sits on the edge of the Golden Valley. Dating back to the 1700s, Little Finch's Cottage is nestled within the original Farmhouse, where you can still find exposed beams and sunny window seats. Step through Little Finch's front door into the lounge/breakfast room which is linked to the bedroom by a steep spiral staircase.
Hidden from view and surrounded by its' own land, Kings Farm remained largely untouched by the modern world for almost two hundred years. The original farmstead buildings tell of a vanished time but neglect of many years has taken its' toll. Kings Farm is one of the last original farmsteads of its' kind in the local area and is very slowly undergoing sympathetic repair and restoration. Guest accommodation is newly decorated and forms part of the refurbishment of the farmhouse, which was in a bad state of repair, when purchased in 2018. The guest shower room is a new addition to the house and is just a few steps across the passageway from the bedroom, which has an attractive window seat and Victorian fireplace, which is not useable. The guest sitting room has a Victorian open fireplace but central heating has been installed throughout the house. No kitchen or washing up facilities. In the late nineteen eighties, Kings Farm was used as a location for a TV series called, Forever Green. The storyline was of a family, with a badly asthmatic daughter, who relocated from London to a neglected Farmhouse in the countryside. Various environmental issues were covered in the series. We lead an outdoor life as we have dogs and horses. Guests are allowed to bring dogs. The accommodation is suitable for one large dog e.g. Labrador or two small/medium dogs e.g. Cocker Spaniel. Guests are welcome to exercise their dog(s), on leads, across our fields, which are just a few yards from the farmhouse. WiFi is not currently available.
The exceptionally beautiful countryside of the Cotswolds is all around, with woods and valleys, stone walls , villages and hamlets whose cottages and farmsteads are built with Cotswold limestone. Ancient footpaths criss cross the landscape. The Daneway Inn, sitting close to the Severn and Thames canal towpath, can be reached by following the footpath which crosses our land. We are about three miles from the village of Miserden, which has Misarden Park at its' heart. The plant nursery has a welcoming cafe while, in the village, there is the Carpenters Arms pub. The town of Stroud is about a 20 minute drive away. The Saturday Farmers Market is well worth a visit, with many local organic foodstuffs to purchase. We are a few miles from the main base of Giffords Circus, a touring village-green circus. The market town of Cirencester is about a twenty minute drive away and Cheltenham, which hosts several horse racing festivals, together with annual cricket, jazz, science, music and literature festivals, is about a forty five minute drive from us.

The Living Space Converted from a stable block are two delightful cottages built in traditional honey coloured Cotswold stone, originally a part of an 18th Century Coaching Inn, which was then called The Crown. The stables, were used to accommodate the extra horses required to help pull the coaches up Crickley Hill. The property was bought at the end of the 19th Century by Sir William Thistleton-Dyer who was a director of Kew Gardens. Whether he had renamed it or not we are unsure but at that time it was called “The Ferns” then Crickley Court and the sloping land at the rear of the house was apparently well looked after and contained many rare and unusual plants. The cottages are situated within this beautiful setting, surrounded by the vast gardens which are very picturesque. Each has its own private garden and there is also a separate children’s play area with swings, slide and trampoline. Crickley Court Cottages are situated on the side of Crickley Hill, an area of outstanding natural beauty. We have good links to ALL parts of the Cotswolds via the A417, M5, A46 and A40. We are also very close to Crickley Hill Country Park and also many parts of The Cotswold Way. They are ideally placed to visit the many attractions, villages and towns of the Cotswolds. Amber Cottage sleeps 4 & Jasmine Cottage sleeps 4 + 2, they can be booked separately or together to accommodate larger groups. Bedrooms (downstairs) Bedroom 1 Can be Twin or King beds. Bedroom 2 Twin bedroom. Family Bathroom Bath with separate shower.
