'Casa delle more' is a nice stand-alone two-storey house in Gambatesa, hosting 6, recently renovated with a global taste integrated in local traditions. With a stunning view on the Lake Occhito, use it as base-camp to explore Molise or to just relax
An ancient stand-alone rustic house in the middle of the Medieval village of Gambatesa (Italian for straight leg, from the Earl of Gambatesa whom lost a leg in battle, as the legend goes). Gambatesa is at the hearth of prominently rural Molise region, one of the most unspoiled regions of Italy, still unknown to the mainstream Tourism.
The house can comfortably host up to 6 people, in two rooms (one double-bed and two single-bed) and one large sitting room, where a bed-sofa is available. It has one bathroom, entirely rehabilitated in July 2012. Larger groups can easily find accomodation in other private houses of the village, just let us know. We have just finished (March 2013) to entirely refurbish and rehabilitate the house with a new kitchen, bedrooms, views, balcony. The house is decorated with pieces from all over the world (Asia, Africa, Latin America) that we take back every year when we go back to Italy for holidays (we currently work and live in Africa), which are spoused with the objects of the rural tradition of the Molise region. It allies a fresh globalized style with the rural tradition of Southern Italy.
Most likely we will not be around, but you can have all help from the family and friends, should you require any.
The village and its region:
Situated at the top of the hill, overlooking the Lake Occhito, the village offers the beauty and calm of a rural village in the South of Italy. Go for a walk downhill to pick tasty blackberries (we call our house the Home of Blackberries), for horse-riding, or (demanding but) beautiful bycicle ride across the hills.
Or just (email hidden) with the Elders of the village, with a Campari and an ice-cream. Ideal for motobikers, with all twist and turns that rely ancient villages one to another. At New Years Eve, discover the tradition of the 'Maintunate'. All villagers, tourists and migrants back for the Feasts, walk the streets of the village all night long (litterally), singing from house to house in Bands, each one with their songs, instruments and 'Cantore', the story-teller who improvises the songs. Bring along your musical instruments and join the party.
Please note that the village does not offer many restaurant facilities. A holiday there should be intended to discover ancient tastes and just take a break from the Internet (available anyway), the speed of everyday life and large cities. Seize it as a good opportunity to learn how to cook the Italian way from experienced villagers, with basic ingredients that have made Italian cuisine reknown worldwide. We can organize this for you.
The village really is child-friendly. Many streets are too small for cars and kids roam freely, easily making new friends, or joining for long walks in the nature.
For an escapade to the sea, Gambatesa is situated within a 1 and 1/2 hours range from the City of Termoli, where you can take the boats to the beautiful Tremiti Islands, 1 and 1/2 hours from the Gargano in the Apulia region, and 2 hours drive from Naples.
It is also surrounded by historic places like the town of Lucera, where the Mores mercenaries of Federico II lived.
You can reach the village by car, landing at the Low-Cost airport of Pescara or Naples, or by bus from Campobasso.
