The Cabin is clean, cozy and very private. It's surrounded by woods and has a very large wrap around deck. The Cabin will accommodate up to six people. The living room offers a queen size sleeper sofa. It has a 46" flat screen TV with a DVD/VHS player, Dish TV with Sirius radio and Satellite Wi-Fi is provided. There are two bedrooms and two bathrooms. A full size kitchen and a cozy wood stove... we supply the wood! Dogs are considered. There is an additional $20 pet cleaning fee.
Surrounded by the beauty of California's northern forests, and the sounds of Smith River echoing through the landscape (during winter) this cabin is the perfect getaway to nature and seclusion. Inside is a smoke free environment and pets are considered. The Cabin is approximately 864 sq. ft. and will accommodate up to six guests on almost an acre of land, with a pond, and completely fenced for your privacy. Offering two bedrooms, one with a king-sized bed and a 39" flat screen TV, and the other with a twin-over-queen bunk bed set (top bed has a 150 pound weight limit). The living room also boasts a queen-sized sleeper sofa, and there are additionally two bathrooms. The living room is a great spot in which to unwind, with a large flat-screen television with DVD/VHS player, Satellite internet, and comfy seating. A range of books, games, DVDs/VHS and Sirius radio are provided for entertainment. A fully-equipped kitchen (no dishwasher) allows guests to self-cater in style, with complimentary gourmet coffee, tea and hot chocolate. Outside, a spacious wrap-around deck is the perfect place to gaze over the forests full of local flora, with an outdoor grill for alfresco dining and cooking. The host provides many pantry items such as cooking oil and spices. Air conditioning and heating are featured throughout the cabin, which, along with a wood-burning stove, will keep things cozy in every season. And we supply the wood! A private washing machine and dryer will make even longer stays comfortable, and guests will also have access to a two car garage. All linens and towels are provided by the host, as well as shampoo, body wash and laundry detergent. The Cabin is in a remote area so cell phone reception is variable depending on your service provider and phone. There is a land-line and WiFi is also provided. There are many times when it's foggy at the coast but it's sunny at The Cabin! It's just a 10 minute walk or 2 minute drive to the pristine Smith River. It’s the largest free-flowing (no dams) river in the state, producing the largest Steelhead and Chinook salmon. Dogs are considered, please tell me how many, how old and how large/small. No cats please. There is an additional $20 pet cleaning fee. From The Cabin it’s just 11 miles on scenic Hwy 199 to Redwood National Park and Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park. Some of the tallest trees in the world reside here and there are many trails to explore. Drive or bike through Redwood National Park on unpaved Howland Hill Rd. There are massive Redwood trees! Like the ocean? We’re only 22 miles away as you drive through the Redwoods and Crescent City. In Crescent City there is Battery Point Lighthouse. In fact, there are many lighthouses along the coast. There is a great view from these lighthouses to do some whale watching. Gray whales migrate from December through May. You may also see Orcas and Humpback whales. Northern California and Oregon have some of the most beautiful coastlines. Yet, on those foggy coastal days, Gasquet is usually in the sunshine. Great Fishing -- Along with Steelhead and Chinook, the Smith also has runs of Silver salmon, Coho and sea-run cutthroat trout. The Chinook runs start in late August, going through late December, with its peak in November. Steelhead starts their runs in early December and goes through March, with their peak in January. The Smith River flows through some of the most beautiful scenery in California. From Six Rivers National Forest through Jedediah State Park, people say that it’s hard to decide which is better, the scenery or the fishing.

The cozy studio is right above the beautiful flowing creek in the small town of Happy Camp. We are surrounded by Wilderness areas, a true nature adventure paradise. With loads of hiking, biking and river rafting. So many rare plants, birds, fish and animals. A trail-head retreat with creek side relaxation. Between Redwood N.P. the Pacific Coast-Crater Lake N.P., Caves NM, Mt Shasta, the Salmon, Smith, Scott, Klamath 'Wild and Scenic Rivers'. Summertime swimming is best july to October. Enjoy!
The creek side studio and sun patio are right above the flowing creek with a bench and a picnic table. The kitchenette has a small refrigerator, microwave, toaster oven, hot plate and tea kettle. The bathroom is up a few steps past the shower area all close to nature with much bird and water song. Our home is above. It has a separate entrance and there is ladder access to get down to the creek. This space is not accessible for most disabilities as there are stairs and a ladder. If you want to have time to hike the local trails you really need two nights to have enough time to get out for the day.
The small town is great for getting supplies for adventuring in our amazing wild and scenic area, this is a great place to lay over on route to the redwoods, or Crater Lake.. Mt Shasta is another destination. In other words get out in the National Forest! Go on adventures. Arrange a raft trip, kayak, mountain biking. Or just walk and sit by a clear creek. Let nature sink in. Gas, Market, pizza, deli, post office, bank, auto parts, Karuk Tribe museum, Forest Service office. Small town.

Riverside cabins just inland from the Redwood Coast in a little-known corner of N. California with winding rivers, granite canyons, and majestic mountains waiting to be explored. The warm, sunny interior of the Klamath offers an alternative to the cool and foggy Redwood Coast, and you'll be far from the crowds. We can arrange a rafting trip, point you to a trailhead, or you can just relax by the river and explore on your own to see what you find. You won't be disappointed.
This riverside cabin comes with a full kitchen & linens, private bedroom, bathroom and a deck that looks over the Klamath River. Enjoy the view of the river from your private deck and sleep with your door open to the sounds of the river. The interior has a clean, aesthetically pleasing, rustic appeal of solid redwood interior with hardwood floors. The bedroom has a queen bed, and two more twin beds can be made in the common kitchen/living room area. Each cabin has identical floor plans, with the exception of Cabin 6, which is slightly larger, (it has a second bedroom with queen bed, and more windows facing the river). Pets welcome, as long as they can behave around our goats & chickens!
The Klamath Region is a remote corner of Northern California and Southern Oregon and a little-known vacation spot. Officially designated a Wild and Scenic River, the Klamath River encompasses two nationally recognized scenic byways. Miles of rivers and creeks offer world-class white water river rafting and kayaking vacation opportunities, as well as crystal clear pools for swimming and fishing. The Mid-Klamath offers some of the finest, yet least-known steelhead fishing on the West Coast. In sharp contrast to the "shoulder to shoulder" experience of the river mouth, seasoned anglers will be refreshed to find entire stretches of the Mid-Klamath River to themselves, and it's a great area for beginners as the chances are high of hooking fish. Opportunities abound for fly-fishing, bait and lures. You can fish from our own stretch of river bar, choose several nearby river access points, or take a drift boat tour. We work with expert drift boat guides who can put you right where the fish are. These local guides live and work on the Klamath River and know it intimately from years of experience. Situated in one of the largest tracts of remaining wilderness in the lower 48, the region's four Wilderness areas (Siskiyou, Marble Mountain, Russian and Trinity Alps) offer exceptional hiking. The Klamath Mountains are the cross roads of the West, where north meets south, the coastal range meets the interior Great Basin, and the Sierra Nevada meet the Cascades, creating a rich and unique region of endemic plants found nowhere else in the world. We're in a secluded spot, where the peace and quiet of the river and surrounding mountains are the main attraction. There are no restaurants in this area, each cabin has a fully equipped kitchen, so bring your own food. There are a few small country stores nearby that stock the basics.

Approximately 260 sq ft, earth sheltered structure within our permaculture-based, sustainable, off-grid village. It is one of a kind in architecture and theme with colored bottles built into the wall, stained glass windows, center tree pillar with atrium windows above, and medieval Celtic Cross above the Hobbit Hole (outside and atop) give it a Hobbit Church feel.
This is a primitive cabin, it DOES have running water, but NO electricity (you bring your own candles BYOC). Common facilities (kitchen and bath) being shared with the larger community, about 200 yds away. *Just so everyone knows, during heavy rains in our RainForest winter months, sometimes the floor can get a little wet by the door. It doesn't really impede anything, but fyi. And understand, this is essentially a cave, so it can be damp in the winter. I recommend bringing an extra sleeping bag or borrow on of ours, OR bring some firewood (or you can use ours) as there is a wood stove inside next to the tempurpedic, round, Hobbit Love Nest Bed. Breakfast nook has a Hobbit mushroom table and there is a comfy sky chair suspended for luxuriating. Built into the side of a mountain with a seasonal spring (there are springs everywhere here in the mountainous rain forest) that runs through the house -- on purpose -- so there is often the sound of a babbling brook in the HH November thru May. If you are looking for a unique experience in a beautiful natural area and would like to experience life in an off-grid, sustainable, permaculture-focused ecovillage - and all the rough roads, dirt, mud, insects, messes, barking dogs, mosquitos, bees, mice, early morning roosters, communal living, composting toilets, ongoing construction projects in remote wilderness - then we invite you join us in our mountain village! Our property encompasses 160 acres of pristine natural wilderness in Northern California's beautiful Smith River canyon - home of the only un-dammed river in the state. Lush fern-encrusted hillsides slope down to countless spring-fed streams, teeming with wildlife, from cute caterpillars to (also cute, sometimes!) black bears. Accessible only by forestry road from scenic Redwoon Hwy (CA-199,) this is an opportunity to experience our responsible natural relationship with Mother Earth. This location is very beautiful and quite remote, so please be sure you've read through the full description and are prepared for certain elements of "roughing it" and adventure travel. The Village is also a work-in-progress so we are likely to be working and there may be construction, dirt, and messes around! Amenities: •Lighting / Electricity: Your cabin does not have electricity; we try to keep a flashlight, lantern, and/or candle available for your use -- but we recommend that you bring your own lights. •Kitchen: The outdoor kitchen, about 200yds away from the Hobbit Hole, has a small propane camping stove, and plenty of pots, pans, and utensils for your use. We do not have refrigeration but we do have a freezer (with ice packs) and coolers for storing food. •Bathrooms: We use composting toilets (buckets with seats); there is an indoor toilet in the bathhouse. Hot shower in the sauna/bathhouse. It is about 200 yds on average away from most of our cabins •(Lack of) Phone / Internet: Some Verizon and US Cellular service is available, but AT&T and T-Mobile do not service our area. We do not have wifi. The Great Outdoors: •Domestic animals: Between the three dogs who run around at night chasing forest creatures, springtime frog concerts, and the early-rising chickens, it is likely that there will be some animal noises occurring at unpredictable moments during the night and day. •Wild animals: There are various of these that live in the forest, including skunks, chipmunks, foxes, black bears, and many birds and insects. Since we have dogs and people around, the wild animals tend to keep their distance from the areas that we use. If you are lucky, you might spot a black bear on a hike; they are basically like big raccoons and prefer to run away from humans. If you are looking for a unique experience and up for rustic accommodations with a few off-grid perks, we welcome you to join us in our mountain paradise!
Our 160-acre property is surrounded by about a million acres of National Forest. Our neighborhood is all made of trees, huckleberry bushes and animals. We love it here. It is very remote, peaceful, and functionally sustainable in its focus. The closest neighbor is a Buddhist Hermitage about a mile up the forestry road. Also, supposedly, Sasquatch live here! (it is the epicenter for documented sightings) Most visitors to the area are interested in spending time in the redwoods – we are about 30-45 minutes from the nearest entrance to Jedediah Smith Park, home of Stout Grove and other beautiful redwood hikes. Driving into Crescent City, about 45-60 minutes, winds you right through the "gentle giants" on your way to or from Redwood National Park.

In modern manufactured home set in a quiet rural subdivision of 5 acre or larger parcels. Have a large amiable Doodle and small dog--so a guest dog is welcome. Close to hiking.
Cozy room with queen bed and desk. A roomy bathroom with 2 sinks and a shower/tub combo-- is next door. (It must be shared if there is a guest in the adjacent Blue Room.) There is a TV with Roku that can be used for Netflix. (No TV service.)
This is very rural. I live in a small development of about 15 properties that are 5 or more acres in size. Surrounded by much larger properties. Nice view of the Marble Mountains. There are old logging roads that can be used for hiking plus the 1.7 mile loop that I live on. Close to Kidder Creek Camp and about 10 miles from JH Camp.

We also have lawn games to play while you enjoy the views on a private three acres in a forested setting.
Come and stay at our family's treasured property that we call Driftwood. Our cabin has incredible ocean views, a large new hot tub, and a cozy feel in a very private forest setting. We have a fully equipped kitchen, a small living room with wood burning stove, flat screen T.V. and a DVD/VCR. Upstairs includes one bedroom with three twin beds (third bed is a "trundle") and a half bath, making our cabin comfortable and cozy to sleep up to 5 guests. Sleep high in a tree overlooking a forested valley, deep in Northern California's Six Rivers National Forest. Part of a remote, off-grid "village," including a few other cabins, chickens, dogs, frogs, cats, permaculture gardens and all kinds of cool, sustainable projects. Search Maitreya Mountain Village for a clearer picture of our sustainable living project.
Enjoy the privacy of your own cozy tree house nestled deep in the heart of Six Rivers National Forest. There's plenty of blankets and sleeping bags to keep you warm. •Kitchen: The outdoor kitchen, near your cabin, has a small propane camping stove, and plenty of pots, pans, and utensils for your use. We do not have refrigeration but we do have a freezer (with ice packs) and coolers for storing food. •Bathrooms: We use composting toilets (buckets with seats); there is an indoor toilet in the bathhouse. Hot shower in the sauna/bathhouse. It is about 200 yds on average away from most of our cabins. Also, our Hygge Hall is a common area with an indoor kitchen and all the condiments and utensils you need. •(Lack of) Phone / Internet: Some Verizon and US Cellular service is available, but AT&T and T-Mobile do not service our area.

Our Romantic River Teepee is located next to our Riverview Yurt. It overlooks the Klamath River flowing below and has it's own path down to the river. Ideal for two people, but if you want to bring friends or kids with sleeping bags, there's room! It's authentic with a mulch floor, fire place with a grill you can cook on, and near by outhouse. You can also use the fully equipped shower house up the hill with hot water showers, sinks and flush toilets!
Space DIRECTIONS TO OTTER SPACE - Do not rely on your GPS. It doesn't work well around here! From Southern CA, Los Angeles: North on the 405 to I-5. - After about 5 hours, take #580 West toward San Francisco/ through Oakland, Berkeley, Richmond & San Rafael, where you will hit the US#101. Continue North to Ukiah/Willits/Eureka/Arcata/Orick From SFO area: - Oakland Airport – take Hegenberger Rd North to 880North to 80/580North, cross the Richmond/San Rafael bridge ($5), and you will join US#101 North. - San Francisco Airport – take US#101 North to Ukiah/Willits/Eureka/Arcata/Orick (Fill up with gas in Arcata before you make the rest of the trip to Otter Space.) Just north of Orick, make a right turn onto Bald Hill Road taking you toward the “Lady Bird Johnson” grove of redwoods. As soon as you turn onto Bald Hill Road, check your odometer. You will be 23 miles from Otter Space. Bald Hill Road will take you eastward up the mountain. The road goes mostly uphill for the next 9 to 10 miles. There are a couple of scenic view sites on the right, where you might care to stop and check out the view. Sometimes we see Elk grazing in one of the highland meadows on the right. At about 9.5 miles, you will come to a Fire Station on your left. Veer uphill to your left onto Johnson Road. Check your odometer again. You have about 13.5 miles to go from this point. Slow down, watch for potholes in the dirt road. Go over the cattle guard bars in the road. Stay to your left when in doubt. At 5.5 & 6 miles in, you will pass new roads on the left made by the lumber company doing some clear cuts. Make sure you are on the main road, which veers to the right in these two locations. When you get to 10 miles in on Johnson Road, there is a 90 degree turn in the road down to your left. This is called Bald Eagle Bluff by some. You may want to stop and get out and walk up onto the raised area and look down onto the mighty Klamath streched out below you. As you proceed downhill, around many curves, and approach the 13 mile mark, you will be almost all the way down to the river. Look for a red gate and fence on your right, set back as the road curves to the left. This is the Otter Space entrance. We are at 13065 Johnson Road. There is no number posted. Come on in. Park to the right of the Barn. If Joe and Wendy are not there to meet you. Walk down to the meadow and you will see their yurt across the meadow toward the river. Walk on over and introduce yourself. Their kids, Josie, Bean and Scout will probably run out to greet you! They will be there. Regular cel phones will not work on Johnson Road. You can call Joe & Wendy Moore at ( if there is an emergency. See you there! Good Luck! If you want to check out Otter Space on Earth, look for CA route 169,and go all the way to the end of the road. It ends in Johnson's Bar, CA which is on the other side of the Klamath River directly across from Otter Space. You can see the round yurt and the orchard! . Other things to note This is a remote site with very limited phone and wireless service. It's more of a destination than a stopping off place. It's quite wild and beautiful and the closest store is an hour away, ... the closest town is Arcata, CA and that's about an hour and a half drive. We are off the grid and must use solar or generator power to have electricity. This is an experience for most people. The 13 miles of the drive after you leave Highway 101, is on a small two lane paved road through woods and high meadows, (Bald Hills Road), and then onto a 13 mile dirt road (Johnson Road) with very few houses as it's mostly lumber company logging roads. Be prepared with food and flashlights. Guest access Please avail yourselves of the trails, the orchard and full length of the Klamath River "beach". There's a couple of neighbors just downstream, and the Yurok village known as "Johnson's" on the map, but as Wautek to the tribe. We have a 50 tree orchard full of apple, pears, peaches, cherries, plums, grapes, and even a persimmon tree. All organic. Just depends what's ripe when you come. We like to share. Guest interaction I live in Topanga, CA, so I am at Otter Space at different time, but my co-hosts Joe Moore and his wife Wendy and their 3 kids actually live on the property. They are very friendly, down-home and helpful. You'll like 'em all! A very special family. They currently live in the main house, and we're building a log cabin for them and their 3 children down by the river.
NATURE & HIKING, THE YUROK RESERVATION & JOE & WENDY'S CLASSES ON SUSTAINABLE LIVING SKILLS WILD LIFE On the Klamath River - we might see turkey vultures, golden eagles, bald eagles, merganser ducks, cormorants, King Fishers, Great Blue Heron, night heron, white heron and osprey. Forty years ago there were only 6 osprey nests on the river, due to DDT depleting the calcium in the eggs of the females. Now there are over 325 osprey nest sites on the river. Ospreys are said to be monogamous, and they migrate every year from South America. Each of the little swallows that skin the surface of the river in the morning and early evening eat more than 1000 mosquitoes a day (Yaay!) We occasionally see a harbor seal who comes upriver in the summer to avoid the competition at the mouth of the Klamath. We also have seen a family of river otters that live just downstream, and an occasional river beaver. We have never seen a sturgeon at Otter Space. Sturgeon is a fish that has been the same for 20 million years. The biggest sturgeon caught in the Klamath was in (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)pounds, 16 feet long, 300-325 years old. They don’t mature until they’re 45-48yrs old. A female will lay 700,000 eggs in her lifetime. Only 2 will reach maturity. There is a “sturgeon hole” about 7 miles downstream where they live. Black bears - If you are lucky, you might get to see one of the timid black bears that live in the Lower Klamath area. They are not aggressive unless it is a mother bear protecting her cubs. They run the other way when they see or smell humans. We do not have any brown bears in this area. There is a cinnamon colored black bear that visits us sometimes. Please do not ever feed wild animals. We also have silver fox, chipmunks, possums, raccoons, one guest saw a very rare lynx and black-tail deer graze in the meadow in the morning and evening. We do not have poisonous snakes in the area, but sometimes there are garter snakes in the orchard. Mountain lions - are dangerous. We have never seen one, but they do live in this area. Here are the California Department of Fish and Game’s suggestions based on behavior analysis of attacks by mountain lions. Do not hike alone. Make plenty of noise to reduce your chances of surprising a lion. Go in groups, with adults supervising children. Take a sturdy walking stick: you can use it to ward off a lion. Keep children close to you. Observations of captured lions reveal that they seem especially drawn to children. Keep children within your sight at all times. - Stop! Do not run from a lion. Back away from it slowly, but only if you can do so safely, as running may stimulate a lion's instinct to chase and attack. Face the lion and stand upright. Make eye contact. If you have small children with you, pick them up so they won't panic and run. Although it may seem awkward, pick them up without bending over or turning away from the lion. - Do not bend or crouch over. Do all you can to appear larger. A person squatting or bending over looks a lot like a four-legged prey animal. Raise your arms. Open your jacket, if you're wearing one. Throw stones, branches, or whatever you can grab without crouching down or turning your back. Wave your arms slowly and speak firmly in a large voice. Never approach a lion, especially one that is feeding or with kittens. Most mountain lions will try to avoid confrontation. Give them a way to escape. Fight back if attacked. Try to stay on your feet if a lion attacks you. Lions have been driven off by prey that fights back. Some hikers have fought back successfully with sticks, caps, jackets, garden tools, and their bare hands. HIKING We are surrounded by old logging trails made by the lumber companies 80 years ago when they clear cut the old growth redwood on our side of the mountain, and now it's completely reforested with 200 ft. tall Doug Fir, Madrone, Cedar, Oak, other pine species and Pepper wood trees. The property surrounding us is mostly owned by Green Diamond Company that cuts trees for lumber and then re-forests with saplings. There are also other properties that are not clearly marked or fenced in. Mostly everyone we have met here are friendly, and we have never had any problems exploring the trails and creeks in this area, but please use discretion and politeness while hiking. If you see marijuana growing, please DO NOT HELP YOURSELF. It’s not wild, and growers do not take kindly to people helping themselves. Even if you get away with it, they may want to “teach us a lesson” at Otter Space. Please respect these wishes. The Yurok People The Yurok live on the Pacific coast of northwestern California. Many of their villages were either on lagoons or at the mouths of streams; others were along the lower course of the Klamath River. The Yurok placed great emphasis on accumulating wealth and asserting status. The wealthiest members of Yurok society owned multiple sets of dance regalia and served as hosts for ceremonial gatherings. They wore distinctive clothing, such as highly decorative basketry caps, as a means of displaying their wealth. Even their style of speech was more elaborate than the contracted version spoken by commoners. The natural resources of northwestern California were abundant, permitting the Yurok to live in permanent, year round villages. They harvested salmon, sturgeon, eel, surf fish, shellfish, sea lions, deer, elk, and acorns. Dense redwood forests provided the Yurok with wood for their distinctive split-plank houses, constructed with either single-pitched or double-pitched roofs. Redwood also was used for the manufacture of a variety of household items, such as wooden stools, storage boxes and cooking implements. Using stone adzes and wedges, Yurok craftsmen carved blunt-ended dugout canoes from large redwood logs. OTTER SPACE - JOE & WENDY MOORE SUSTAINABILITY WORKSHOPS We are so fortunate to have two people with a huge amount of experience and deep knowledge about a variety of sustainability skills living on site. Joe and Wendy Moore have been living sustainably off the land for years, (you can watch their YouTube video – search for Off The Grid in Kansas In A Straw Bale House III). They now live at Otter Space with their three children, and we have the benefit of their expertise when you come to camp. Take advantage of this unique learning opportunity by attending any of their workshops. CHECK IT OUT! Intro Session: Joe and Wendy offer a one-hour introductory session for $25 dollars so you can ask all the questions you may have about their wide range of expertise in sustainable practices. If you decide to take a more in-depth workshop with them, the introductory session cost will be deducted from the workshop fee. Suggested discussion topics include: Organic Gardening - Seed Saving - Bee Keeping - Soap Making - Sugaring (syrup making) - Food Preservation - Pressure Canning - Dehydrating - Smoking - Root Cellar - Cheese Making - Dairy - Animal Husbandry - Horse Farming - Primitive Shelters - Tanning Hides - Rocket Stoves - Mass Heaters - Alternative Energy - Solar - Wind - Water - Alternative Healing - Natural Health - Cob Building – Cob Ovens – Straw-Bale Building – Wild Edibles – Fishing – Archery – Bow Drill Fire Making - Flint Knapping – Spinning - Crocheting - Yoga - Sweat Lodge – Native Indigenous Peoples’ Philosophy WORKSHOPS You can enroll in any of the workshops below either for a half-day ($100 ea./ $75 ea. for 3 or more), or a full day ($200. ea./ $175 ea. for 3 or more). BUILDING SUSTAINABLY Cob building: Probably the most beautiful, natural, and efficient form of shelter ever invented. I built the largest cob house in America at the time, 30x40 with walls 2 foot thick. It also had cob interior walls and a cob floor. Although cob is probably the best long-term natural building material, it is very labor intense. Offered in half day courses that include discussion on materials involved, hands on mixing, and building a small section of wall. Advanced notice required. Cob oven: Have you ever had bread from a masonry oven? Something a conventional oven just can't reproduce. Beautiful and functional, Cob ovens are something everyone should have in their backyard. This is going to be a full day workshop! Plan on getting your feet and hands a little muddy; but, at the end of the day, you will walk away with all the knowledge you need to build your own awesome, outdoor oven. Advanced notice required. Straw-bale building: You can see my video... speaks for itself. Straw-bale is a great, quick building material that looks and feels like a cob house with only a fraction of the labor. If people realized the superior insulation value alone of the Straw-bale house, the stick house would be a thing of the past. Perfect for dry climates, like Southern California, as it's only downfall is sensitivity to moisture. Offered in full day courses that include discussion of materials, and hands on building and plastering. Advanced notice required. EATING SUSTAINABLY Wild Edibles: One of my passions! I'm always looking for ways to increase my knowledge about wild edibles, and share what I have learned. Knowing that Stinging Nettles taste like spinach, and are harmless and nutritious when lightly-steamed, could save someone's life. Learning about, and tending the wild perennial food supply, to help return balance to the Earth, is what it's all about. Offered in half-day courses which includes roaming the forest, gathering, and preparing a sustainable harvest. Fishing: The Klamath River is well known for its world-class fishing for salmon and steelhead. The infamous "half-pounders" arrive in July (anything under 3 pounds is called a half-pounder) followed by a nice run of salmon in September. Offered in half-day trips (morning or evening). Rod, tackle and bait included. Custom smoking is available if you catch the big one! SUSTAINABILITY SKILLS Archery: Wendy's parents met at an archery tournament in Southern California almost 50 years ago. Might mention that her father took the championship; so the fundamental techniques of archery were taught to her at a young age, and is something she still enjoys and practices today. Offered in half-day courses which include bow rental, arrows (handmade by Joe), and plenty of target practice. Flying target contest with flu flu arrows for a finale! Fun for all (8+), bring the whole clan for a family discount. Bow-drill fire making: What an awesome technology; rubbing two sticks together to the extreme! Making fire without a lighter is something most people can no longer do. Materials are the key... you will take home the knowledge and the bow drill you make. Offered in half-day courses. Flint Knapping: The art of flint knapping is controlled demolition of stone. It is an art that all of our ancestors engaged in at one time or another. This connection is felt on a very real level every time you produce a point out of stone. Classes include hands on learning of direct percussion, indirect percussion (Joe's favorite) and pressure flaking with primitive antler or modern copper. All tools and rock provided, with additional rock available for purchase. Offered in full or half day classes. Spinning/ Crocheting: Spinning was my favorite hobby for a while, and is a fun, productive thing to do in the evening instead of watching television. I've raised all the animal breeds of fiber (sheep, goat, alpaca) except angora rabbits, and have much experience shearing, carding, and spinning. Alpaca is by far the best, and I brought quite a bit of it with me. Wendy does the crotchet ... she's made hats, scarves, mittens, booties and blankets. Offered in half-day courses where you will see and learn the many steps involved in producing a truly homemade item; from barnyard to boutique. Soap Making: Making soap is a skill that you will never regret. Better yet, once you realize it's easy, you'll wonder why it took you so long to try it. We use only the finest oils, and consequently, produce some of the finest soap on the planet. (or at least in "Otter Space") This will be a half-day class where you will participate in each step involved, and uncover the secrets of producing excellent soap you will love to use and share. MIND, SPIRIT, HEART AND BODY Sweat Lodge/ Native Indigenous Peoples’ philosophy: Medicine Man and Woman in the New Haven Native American Church. We are well trained by a Nez Perce Medicine Man in traditional ceremony and sweat lodge. Native American's have safely guarded and protected the ancient ceremony known as the Sweat Lodge for hundreds of generations. It has stood the test of time as one of the most enlightening and purifying experiences you may ever have. We are blessed to be in a generation where the door to the lodge is finally opened to the white man; may we all be one heart belonging to the same creator. We could never charge a fee for this experience; if we did we would not be worthy to offer it. However, there is a lot of preparation and work involved to offer such an event. Therefore, we can only ask for tithes and offerings or gifts; as is traditionally accepted. Advanced notice required. Yoga: Enjoy the peace and tranquility of Yoga on the River. Practicing for 15 years in free style yoga, and a physical fitness guru, Wendy will guide you through a fun and invigorating session that will balance your mind and body for the rest of the day. Again, only tithes and offerings.

Wild, remote, tranquil, riverside cabin. Located along the pristine waters of the wild and scenic Salmon River, at its confluence with the Klamath River. This is the place you want to go to get away from it all. A two hour drive from Eureka CA, or 2.5 hours from Ashland OR. Bring a few groceries and you've got everything you need to unplug for as long as you like.
This is a recently remodeled, but rustic cabin in a wild, remote place. It has electricity, lights, and hot water. For spring, winter, and fall, there is a wood stove for heat, with firewood and kindling provided. There is a short trail down to the river spot. you should be comfortable walking on uneven ground to use the trail. The space is perfect for an individual, or couple's get away. It would also work for a couple with one or two kids, as the pull out couch is pretty comfortable. No Pets.
This cabin, while isolated, is only about a 3 minute drive from the local general store. There is free wi-fi at the store, as well as an excellent beer selection, espresso bar, and above average grocery selection. There is no cell service at the cabin, but most phones work thru the wi-fi at the general store.

    Salyer, Kalifornien, USA

A small, rustic, handbuilt cabin deep in the Northern California national forest. Part of a remote, off-grid "village," including a few other cabins, chickens, dogs, frogs, cats, permaculture gardens and all kinds of cool, sustainable projects. Search
If you are looking for a unique experience in a beautiful natural area and would like to experience life in an off-grid, sustainable, permaculture-focused ecovillage and all that a wilderness area has to offer -- rough roads, dirt, mud, insects, messes, barking dogs, mosquitos, bees, mice, early morning roosters, communal living, composting toilets, ongoing construction projects - then we invite you join us in our mountain village! Our little A Frame is a small little cabin. It overlooks the valley quite well. It's well insulated for winter, usually your body heat warms it up quite nicely. There is a often a little mouse in one of the walls, just so ya know. Consider it a mascot -- we're all living, kind of invaded nature, so we live with our creatures here.

  • Vacker plats i bergen i norra Kalifornien.

Kolla in det!

New! Magical rustic charm just minutes from the Pacific Crest trail, this home sits on 20 acres bordered by the Klamath National Forest and over 1000 feet of river frontage. Retreat into the wilderness by staying at the Bird House, perched high in the mountains and overlooking the river. The surrounding windows make you feel as if you are hanging out in the trees. Look out the windows or sit on the wrap-around deck to hear the river flow and the birds play. Siskiyou Use Permit UP1910
Enjoy the fact that you are an an hour from civilization but connected for today’s lifestyle with Wi-Fi. Don’t worry, you don’t have to tell the kids you have Wi-Fi... they can watch dvds and play classic Nintendo games upstairs in the game/bedroom. Enjoy the ground floor patio and private access to the master bedroom. Let the river lull you to sleep as you enjoy the romantic lighting and garden ambiance. Guests can also sleep in one of the three twin beds upstairs, or use the futon in the family room. On the main floor, a daybed is also available for relaxing by the fire. There is plenty of seating, wrap around decks, downstairs patio, woodland paths, and hammock spots waiting for you. It's time to relax and we look forward to hosting you at the Bird House.
The house is located in the Klamath National Forest on 20 acres of our own property that goes across the river. There are families and dogs running around as you drive into Grider Creek Road so please be slow through that area. We are the last house on the road for many miles. Our neighbors are nice but please be respectful of the serene environment and keep noise to a minimum. There are directions at the house so you can get to the other side of the river. Fishing, rafting, hiking, and panning for gold in the river are fun activities in the area.

In addition to our little eco-cabins, we offer camping spots throughout our 160 acre property in Northern California's Six Rivers National Forest. Part of a remote, off-grid "village," including a few other cabins, chickens, dogs, frogs, cats, permaculture gardens and all kinds of cool, sustainable projects. Search Maitreya Mountain Village for a clearer picture of our sustainable living project.
You can set up your tent anywhere in the woods, anywhere in ewok village (which is below/before the tree house area), just not right next to someone else's cabin. There are plenty of flat spots in terraced areas, down at the river (Little Jones Creek) and on any wayward path into our woods. Ask around. You may not find Dan right away, but someone will point you in the right direction. It's kind of a "make yourself at home" and "figure it out yourself," casual arrangement. If you are looking for a unique experience in a beautiful natural area and would like to experience life in an off-grid, sustainable, permaculture-focused ecovillage and all that a wilderness area has to offer -- rough roads, dirt, mud, insects, messes, barking dogs, mosquitoes, bees, mice, early morning roosters, communal living, composting toilets, ongoing construction projects - then we invite you join us in our mountain village! Accessible only by forestry road from scenic Redwood Hwy (CA-199,) this is an opportunity to experience our responsible natural relationship with Mother Earth. This location is very beautiful and quite remote, so please be sure you've read through the full description and are prepared for certain elements of "roughing it" and adventure travel. The Village is also a work-in-progress so we are likely to be working and there may be construction, dirt, and messes around! Amenities: •Lighting / Electricity: Our dining hall (Hygge Hall) has a PV system that you can use to charge stuff, a refrigerator, etc •Kitchen: The outdoor and indoor kitchen in Lower Village has a small propane camping stove, and plenty of pots, pans, and utensils for your use. •Bathrooms: We use composting toilets (buckets with seats); there is an indoor toilet in both bathhouses. Hot shower there, too. It is about 200 yds on average away from most of our cabins and camping spots •(Lack of) Phone / Internet: Some Verizon and US Cellular service is available, but AT&T and T-Mobile do not service our area.
