Mangatutu Hot Springs is a popular Department of Conservation camping, picnic and fishing spot, and a starting point for excurisons up the Mohaka River and further into the Kaweka Forest Park. Need 4x4 vehicle to cross the ford. Located on Makahu Road, Puketitiri 4184, in the Kaweka Forest Park. Approximately a 1 hour drive. The trip involves about 1hr of travel on unsealed gravel roads, as well as a river ford on Makahu Road, 7.5 km from the road end. Avoid or take care when driving through the ford after heavy rain and snow as this will can affect the water level and crossing. Getting to the pools is not easy, but worth the effort. Free entry too. From the car park/bbq area on Makahu Road, follow a track down the cliff towards the Mohaka River until you find the pools - and outstanding views over the river. Soak in one of the two large plastic retangle tubs, built on a deck, with a spectacular outlook of the Mohaka River. Fill with fresh hot water each time using.

The walking tracks are colour coded by distance, at the lower carpark entrance. Continuing along the road, you can drive up to the peak top carpark. Peak House (Restaurant) is a lovely stop for coffee and/or a meal, with rear parking on approach. Past lower carpark, midway to the peak. Access to the top is locked nightly at 9pm. Reopened 5.00am

This beach yields an abundance of Pipi, while flounders are occasionally speared near the water's edge. Crayfish and Paua are also a popular catch.
