Sightseeing

History buffs will love Pompeii, the world famous archaeological site that gives fascinating insights into life as it was thousands of years ago. You will need at least a couple of hours to visit the large site, and tickets can be purchased at the entrance. Note that there isn’t much shade, and in summer it can get very hot so take a hat and water. The site is best enjoyed with a guide - we can help get you in contact with a licensed private English speaking tour guide who will bring the site to life; this is by far the best way to make the most of your visit. GETTING THERE Pompeii is enroute to/from Naples, so it can be very convenient to stop in for a few hours on the way to or from the villa. The site is also easy to reach by public transport - the "Circumvesuviana" train between Naples and Sorrento stops in at Pompeii, with the station right across the road from the site entrance. Another option is visiting on a day trip with a private driver. This kind of trip often includes a visit to Mt Vesuvius, stopping in at a winery for lunch. Please let us know if we can help to put you in touch with any tour operators. The official Pompeii website is http://pompeiisites.org/en/

Capri: Extraordinary beauty, extremes of luxury. Come for a little yacht-spotting and window-shopping. Many of Capri's greatest sights are only visible from the water (eg, the water itself, with its multiple shades of crystal clear blues and greens, and all its hidden grottoes). The best way to visit is easily by private boat tour. This will allow you a full day of guided sightseeing on the water, swimming, and some time on land. We can recommend Little Prince Charters, who do pick ups from the villa. If your budget is a little more modest, you can join a semi-private group boat tour. - but try to stretch it for a private tour if you can, there is nothing else like it!! Otherwise, there is a regular ferry from Sorrento - but remember that on top of the ferry ticket price, you will then need to pay for parking/public transport/taxis to get to the port, and then also for an around-the-island boat tour once you get to Capri. This will bring the total cost per person up to a price that is similar to that of a boat tour, with much more hassle.

A beautiful beachside village on its namesake coastline, Amalfi is famous for its Duomo (Cathedral) and pretty streets. It will not take you too long to visit, so you can/should easily combine it with a day out on the coast itself. Amalfi is about an hour's drive from the villa, given the somewhat crazy traffic along the one narrow cliff top road that winds and curves its way along the coast. You will never forget this drive! If you want someone else to do the driving please let us know and we can put you in touch with a private driver. You can also do a boat tour of the coast, which is a highly recommended way of enjoying it!! For boat tours we can recommend Little Prince Charters - they've always been wonderful with us, our friends and family and of course guests, and will pick up from the villa. If travelling by road, you can think about combining your trip to Amalfi with a stop in Ravello (up in the hills) and in Positano, for a full day out. Insider’s Tip: not far from Amalfi is a rustic little restaurant called La Tonnarella, set on the beach of Conca Dei Marini... with open air seating, cherry tomatoes hanging from the roof and the freshest local seafood. It is a wonderful place for lunch. They will pick you up from Amalfi wharf and take you on a mini cruise to get there.. and then back again afterwards. Best enjoyed on a long lazy day out with a private driver, so that you can enjoy the typical carafes of white wine with peach (vino con le percoche) and limoncello! The little beach is great in the morning sun (it gets shaded by 3pm). Must be booked in advance to ensure the boat transfer; please ask if we can help make a reservation.

Positano is an absolute must-see and less than half an hour from the villa. It is iconic, breathtaking, beautiful, and full of tourists. :) It has a black sand beach if you want to bring swim wear. You can drive yourself, get a private driver, or best yet take a boat trip along the Amalfi Coast. We recommend Little Prince Charters for a reputable company and a great day out. Not far from Positano is Praiano, where you’ll find one of the hottest beach clubs on the coast: One Fire Beach.

Absolutely spectacular views abound in this hilltop village with cobblestone streets and two very picturesque ancient villas with gorgeous gardens. Combine it with a trip to Amalfi as it is a long and winding drive from our villa.

Soak up some sunshine and take a dip into the Mediterranean sea at this local beauty spot, a wide pebble beach. You can hire sun loungers and umbrellas, and there are plenty of restaurants and cafes to choose from for lunch or dinner. To get there, you can drive - there is parking with level access and only a few stairs down to the beach. Otherwise, there is a bus from the village of Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi. Expect a bit of traffic. Insider’s Tip: the next cove along is called Recommone. It has its own very pretty beach and a popular restaurant and beach club called La Conca Del Sogno - not cheap but very beautiful - a place to see and be seen - and a hot spot for the yacht crowd! You can walk a coastal pathway to Recommone, or request a boat transfer to the restaurant. Should be booked in advance.

A nice place to wander around, go shopping, see some pretty views and people watch. Must see: Via San Cesareo and the old town, with narrow cobble streets full of shops selling custom-made sandals, linen, bags, belts and ceramics. And a LOT of lemon products. The public gardens with its cliff-top views. Pop into the Cloisters on the way (you'll see the cloister's archway entrance on your right, just before the gate to the gardens). Top tip: Remember the siesta!! You're best going to Sorrento at either 10am and perhaps staying for lunch (try heading down to a restaurant at Marina Grande, it's an old fishing village that feels miles away), or going at 5pm, as a lot of stores will close during the heat of the day. Stores stay open until at least 8:30pm, often much later. It is about a 20 minute drive from the villa. If you are a very keen walker, you can also walk down from the villa (about 1.5 hours) via the village of Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi. Secret swim spot: if you are feeling adventurous, check out Bagni Di Regina Giovanna - to get there, you’ll need to drive or take a local bus from Sorrento and then hike down a pathway to get to a spectacular little swimming hole set in ancient ruins. A local secret!! For those with young children: a short drive away is the beach of Puolo - this is very popular with local families as it is sandy rather than rocky, it is easily accessible with a pram from the parking area, and has a few restaurants and cafes to choose from, for lunch or dinner. There is also a “free” area that you can sit, in case you don’t want to hire a beach chair and umbrella. It attracts a lot of boats and gets VERY busy and crowded in peak season, so the water isn’t always as clear as at Marina Del Cantone. If you don’t have small children you’ll probably prefer to swim in another spot.
