So interesting... it's a whole neighborhood art installation by a single artist. It's a statement about the blight of Detroit and art at the same time. Enjoy... don't be nervous! It's a world famous site.

Historic... an aquarium from the turn of the century... it's like being frozen in time. Definitely worth a visit. And I believe it's free.

A wonderful day at this significant mansion on the water. Take a tour, roam the grounds and enjoy the drive through Grosse Pointe Michigan to see the richest per capita area of the United States on the way.

Food scene

I probably eat here once a week. I'm addicted to their smothered pork chops, sweet yams and mac! It's cafeteria style, so super fast. Authentic soul food - beverage of choice is grape punch! Dinner place is about $14 and you'll roll out of there.
We love going to Bert's on Saturday early afternoon to watch the locals do Karaoke! They're SOOOoooo good and it's such a fun and welcoming scene. Take in some slow cooked ribs. Sit back and be entertained Detroit Style!!

Really really good slow cooked ribs. Always busy. Sometimes an hour wait time. If that happens, there are other worthy restaurants on the same strip. It's across the street from the old train station that was abandoned and vacant for thirty years and has recently been bought by the Ford Motor Company to be a headquarters for their autonomous car research and development

This is an example of Detroit's amazing renaissance... this building is now a swanky hotel. Back when we first started coming to Detroit, in 2011 there was absolutely nothing going on on this strip. We can't believe the changes. Great spot for some upscale pizza.

Check out their website because this photo tells you nothing about how awesome this restaurant environment is. It's set in a historic fire hall, which recently became a very chic hotel called The Foundation Hotel in Detroit. Another incredible new offering in the revitalized city. I remember when this building was for sale for $500,000 in 2011. Crazy right! Definitely worth stopping in for a cafe or a cocktail to check out what they've done. My husband and I had a date night here recently and the food was fantastic.

Neighborhoods

The Niagara Manor is the the neighborhood called Walkerville. We are close the the river and have lots of hip restaurants and bars. It is the oldest neighborhood in Windsor and it was build around Hirahm Walker's distillery... where they still make famous whiskey like Canadian Club

Shopping

If you're into Outlet shopping... this is a great spot. We enjoy great deals on some of our favorite stores by going to Windsor Crossing. They have a Roots, Tommy Hilfiger and other brands we all know.

Ladies, if you visit the Detroit Institute of Art, right next door in the bottom of a historic condo building are some great shops, including my favorite... The Peacock Room, for a boutique shopping experience. Really unique (and elegant) fashions you won't find at the mall! They have a second location in the Fischer Building, which is a bit larger with some more selection.

We are a border town here in Windsor, so we enjoy the benefits of both cities.

If you head to Detroit, don't forget your passport, and forget all the negative hype you've heard your whole life about Detroit being a scary place. It's a new dawn... it's a new day... Detroit is incredible. It's been called the most interesting city in the world right now... and I have to agree! My husband and I fell in love with Detroit in 2011 and bought a house there as a 'vacation property'. We loved it so much that 4 years later, we decided to leave Toronto to build a life around Detroit and the exciting energy it has going on. We love it. The best part? The people. Smile, say hello and strike up a conversation. Detroiter's are the most welcoming people I've ever met anywhere in the world!
