Alfama is a delightful maze of narrow cobbled streets and ancient houses, which lead up the steep hill from the Tejo Estuary to the Castelo de São Jorge. Contained within this diverse and charismatic district are many of Lisbon’s most important historic buildings, including the Se Cathedral, the Castelo de São Jorge, the Panteão Nacional and the Igreja de Santo António. For visitors, Alfama is a joy to visit and is often best explored by simply getting lost within the labyrinth of alleys and side streets. Around every corner or steep climb, is a delightful plaza, a trendy café, an independent shop or panoramic viewpoint. If you are new to Lisbon, we recommend that Alfama should be the first district that you begin your discovery of the city.

If you want to know where everyone is on Saturday night, chances are good that it’s Bairro Alto. This windy, hilly neighbourhood is filled with bars and has a bohemian vibe, making it one of the coolest places in the city. There are also restaurants, cafés, tattoo parlours and hostels in addition to the ever-present historical landmarks. It’s not just for hanging out in, either; the side streets are filled with apartments and those who can handle the busy weekends love the central location.

Technically, Alcântara is a parish of the district of Lisbon but locals consider it part of the city. Situated between downtown and Belém, it’s a neighbourhood along the river where visitors will find Docas de Santo Amaro (a dock filled with bars and restaurants) and the LX Factory (a renovated factory building complex that’s been converted into shops, offices, restaurants and more).

This trendy neighbourhood is west of Avenida da Liberdade and north of Bairro Alto. The buildings here are grander than many other neighbourhoods in Lisbon, giving off a pricey vibe, and its name even translates into ‘royal prince’. Príncipe Real is a residential neighbourhood but doubles as a social district filled with trendy restaurants, grand mansions, tiny antique shops, Moorish kiosks, and miniature gardens. This neighborhood is located between one of the best viewing platforms in the city, the Miradouro São Pedro de Alcântara, and the charming neighborhood of São Bento, and it is known for its vibrant LGBT scene, sophisticated shopping areas and vintage art galleries where you can inhale the artistic spirit of Lisbon.

The last terminal metro stop (before heading towards Alcântara and Belém) is in Cais do Sodré. From here, travellers can hop on a ferry and sail across the Tejo River to cities such as Almada on the other side. Like Bairro Alto, Cais do Sodré is a cool neighbourhood to go to for a beer and catch up with friends. The Time Out Market, or Mercado da Ribeira, is one of the city’s main food courts that offers everything from traditional meals to trendy treats and bakeries. It is also the home of the colourful Pink Street, full of bars, restaurants and artistic personality.

The Parque das Nações (Park of Nations) is the striking modern side to historic and traditional Lisbon, which extends along the north-eastern side of the Tejo Estuary. The district was rejuvenated from a desolate industrial wasteland for Expo ‘98, and has since been transformed into the centre for corporate Portugal. Instead of becoming a sterile office and residential area, the original Expo attractions have been enhanced, and today the district is popular with Portuguese and tourists alike.

An abandoned industrial site has been turned into a creative, cultural and gastronomic area in restored factory buildings. Here, the past and present converge in a wonderful way! In 1846, one of Lisbon’s most significant factories, the weaving and textile company Companhia de Fiação e Tecidos Lisbonense, found its home in Alcântara. In the following years, the 23.000m2 industrial site was occupied by the food processing company Companhia Industrial de Portugal e Colónias and by printers Anuário Comercial de Portugal and Gráfica Mirandela. After years of being hidden from the public eye, this little fraction of the city has now been unveiled and returned to the community in the form of Lx Factory. This creative hub is fuelled by companies and industry professionals, but it has also been brought to life by an array of different events in fields such as fashion, advertising, communication, multimedia, art, architecture and music, among others, which have encouraged countless visitors to rediscover this part of Alcântara. Every Sunday there is an open air market is held, selling original pieces, trendy hand-made items, 2nd hand, vintage, shoes, plants, food and much more!

This is the story of an unexpected romance between gastronomy and art, in a XVIII century palace. A narrative lived everyday lived throughout the rooms of Palácio Chiado, with different gastronomic concepts coexisting with art in an unparalleled place. Renovation is the key-word when talking about Palácio Chiado. In September of 2018, Palácio Chiado goes under a few refurbishment works and reopens in October, with new gastronomic concepts, albeit with the same diversity and originality it has always had. With exquisite gastronomic and artistic curatorships, this is the FOOD & ART spot of Lisbon. Chiado Palace is not just one restaurant, but 4 in 1. It has 4 menus, based on different countries. There are options for everyone basically, and they are also vegan friendly. Plus the Palace by itself is amazing just to walk into!

Time Out Market is the first market in the world where everything has been chosen, tasted and tested (with four or five stars, and not one star less) by an independent panel of city experts: Time Out’s own journalists and critics. More than 40 spaces with the leading representatives in all the food categories that help make Lisbon what it is - and tastes - all together under one roof. Find out everything you need to taste - and what Time Out had to say about it. A concept created from scratch in 2014 by the team at Time Out Portugal, with only the best ideas and business projects in Lisbon - according to the editorial team - which can stay in the market from one week to three years. If it’s good, it goes in the magazine, if it’s great, it goes into the market. On the one hand, 24 restaurants some of them from very well-known Portuguese chefs, 8 bars, a dozen shops and a high-end music venue called Rive Rouge, all with the very best in Lisbon (the best steak, the best hamburger, the best sushi and the best live performances, amongst others); on the other hand, home to some of the city's best known (and longest-running) market vendors of meat, fish, fruit and flowers.

At the beginning of the Nineteenth Century, in Belém, next to Mosteiro dos Jerónimos (the Heironymite Monastery) there was a sugar cane refinery attached to a small general store. As a result of the 1820 liberal revolution, all convents and monasteries in Portugal were shut down in 1834, the clergy and labourers expelled. In an attempt at survival, someone from the monastery offered sweet pastries for sale in the shop; pastries that rapidly became known as ‘Pastéis de Belém’. At that period the area of Belém was considered far from the city of Lisbon and mainly accessed by steam-boats. At the same time, the grandeur of the monastery and the Torre de Belém (the Belém Tower) attracted visitors who soon grew used to savouring the delicious pastries originated in the monastery. In 1837, the baking of the “Pastéis de Belém”began in the buildings attached to the refinery, following the ancient ‘secret recipe` from the monastery. Passed on and known exclusively to the master confectioners who hand-crafted the pastries in the ‘secret room’, this recipe remained unchanged to the present day. In fact, the only true ‘Pasteis de Belém’ contrive, by means of a scrupulous selection of ingredients, to offer even today the flavour of the time-honoured Portuguese sweetmaking.

For years this was the favorite Bairro Alto bar among maturer crowds, who'd sit for a glass of wine and conversation to the sounds of jazz. It closed in 2007, but reopened under new management in 2009, which turned it into a 100% Portuguese wine bar. It offers a list of almost 300 wines (reds, sparkling, liquors...), dozens of which can be served by the glass. To accompany them you can order the popular toasted chicken sandwich and other "petiscos," including the roasted sausage and cheese and meat platters.

Portugal's "national gallery" is the Ancient Art Museum, opened in 1884 in a 17th-century palace. Its most significant works include Hieronymus Bosch's "Temptation of Saint Anthony" and Albrecht Dürer's "Saint Jerome," but the main highlight is a 15th century masterpiece attributed to Portuguese artist Nuno Gonçalves, called the "Panels of St. Vincent." After a visit to the museum, relax in its delightful garden with river views, where you may sit enjoying a drink or meal from the café.

The Tile Museum presents the history and evolution of the art of the ceramic tile in a magnificent convent from the 1500s, and is one of Lisbon's most beautiful and most impressive attractions. It's also unique in the world, since no other museum focuses on this art that originated in ancient Egypt, and that eventually spread across North Africa and Europe. A tour of the museum includes the splendid church and small Mannerist cloister from the 16th century, and the collection from the 15th century to the present is seen along the way.
