Historical-artistic visits

If you love history and arts I suggest visiting the Roman Archaeological Museum of Positano. The marvelous Roman Villa today is a museum in Positano center, near the largest beach, Marina Grande and next to Saint Mary of the Assumption Church. It open to visitors every day (from 11th April to 31st October) from 9.00am to 9.00pm. From November 1st: 10.00am - 4.00pm every day. The guided tour is about 30 minutes and tickets can be purchased online (official website of MaR Positano Villa Romana) or by going to the ticket office at the museum entrance (payment by credit / debit cards only). I suggest always checking official website for more info!

The Our Lady of the Assumption Church overlooks the sea and its dome, which we see on postcards and photographs, dominates Positano center. The typical colors of majolica of the Amalfi Coast - the green of lush vegetation, the blue of the sea and the yellow of the sun - make its dome shine. Inside, the main altar is decorated with an icon of the Black Madonna of Byzantine style, dating back to the 12th century. Popular tradition says that the painting was on board a sailing ship from eastern regions and that it remain blocked off Positano due to a strong calm see. As the sailors threw most of the cargo overboard, they heard a voice whisper "Posa, posa!" (Posa = Put down!). The captain interpreted those words as a manifestation of the Virgin's will to remain in that place, so he ordered to direct the bow towards land and the ship prodigiously began to move again. On reaching the shore, sailors handed over the effigy of the Virgin and Child to the inhabitants of Positano, who welcomed her joyful and built a temple in her honor near the beach. The name "Positano" would derive from that whisper "Posa".

Beaches and restaurants by the sea

From Spiaggia Grande beach, the largest one, you have the best view of the vertical town: many colorful houses are perched from the sea up on the hillside. The beach is well equipped with bars, restaurants, bathing establishments where you can relax and sunbathe. I recommend some excellent restaurants by the sea as Le tre Sorelle, La Cambusa and Chez Black. L’Incanto is an elegant and exclusive beach club which has a restaurant, a snack bar and even another shore called La Scogliera. Another beach club I suggest is Arienzo, a quieter place away from the crowd and noise of the main beach which is reachable only via sea from the pier in Spiaggia Grande. It’s particularly suitable for families and children. I suggest always checking official websites for more info!

From the largest beach, if you want to stroll close to the see, you can head to the narrow on the right, the so-called Path of Lovers that leads to the Fornillo beach: a romantic sunset walk along this path near the rocky coast. From here you can admire two of the ancient towers, Trasita and Fornillo towers, built on the ledges of the coast to spot pirates. On Fornillo beach there are bathhouses, bars/restaurants ideal for an informal lunch or a relaxing drink. Also, you can go up some stairs and walk a street towards the Lo Guarracino Restaurant, a delightful panoramic place where you can enjoy local flavors for a romantic dinner.

Tourist visits

Li Galli (I Galli = The Roosters), also known as "Le Sirenuse", is an archipelago of three little islands off the Amalfi Coast between Capri Island and Positano, to which they belong administratively. Their names are Gallo Lungo, which takes the form of a half-moon or a dolphin, La Castelluccia, also known as Gallo dei Briganti, and the nearly circular La Rotonda. And if you're interested in a boat tour to take a swim and go snorkeling, never mind, I'll handle it!!! The name, Li Galli, is a reference to the greek sirens, dangerous mythological creatures, said to have lived there, and enchanted the sailors who sailed in those waters, causing them to wreck against the rocks. In Greek Mythology the sirens had the appearance of a bird with a woman's head or they were also represented as female figures with the legs of birds and wings, playing many musical instruments, especially harps, lyres and flute. In many ancient and modern works it was written about the sirens, but the best known are the sirens of which Homer wrote in his famous greek epic poem, The Odyssey: the sirens, however, failed to enchant with their seductive singing voice Ulysses and his sailors who escaped the sad and deadly fate. They were right in the crystal clear waters of Campania, between Naples and Positano. Li Galli have always fascinated celebrities, as the world famous Russian dancer Rudolf Nureyev that bought the archipelago in 1989. Shortly after his death in 1993, it was sold to private owner. Today the archipelago is part of the Marine Protected Area of Punta Campanella.

If you love mountains and feel one with nature, I recommend hiking on Path of Gods from Agerola to Positano. From up there you can enjoy the breathtaking view of the bay below. The fastest way to arrive in Agerola-Bomerano is by taxi (it takes about 1 h - don't worry, you don’t need to look for a taxi... I got this!!!) and then you hike on the path towards Nocelle for about 3 hours, the uppest area of Positano. Otherwise you could take the bus to Amalfi and another one to Bomerano.

When you'll come on the Amalfi Coast you’ll be spoiled for choice: in addition to the most famous and well-known places, you can visit the villages outside of the usual tours, fishing villages, natural wonders such as marine grottos, small beaches (some of them are reachable only by sea) and solitary coves. And what’s better than a boat trip? Imagine swimming in crystal clear waters, discovering and exploring inlets and enjoying the sun and the gentle sea breeze while sipping a drink and crunching snacks… Imagine having a delicious meal in a characteristic restaurant where fish dishes are served, daily fresh fish caught by local fishermen. Your dreams will come true! And don’t even worry about setting it up… I got this!!! Salvatore’s boat is for max. 6 guests cruising on board and tours will start from May 15th. This experience along the “Divina Costa” will make your holidays stunning and unforgettable.

Bring comfortable shoes with you!!!

Since Positano extends vertically and its characteristic stairs are everywhere, I recommend bringing with you sneakers and comfortable shoes. Getting around to visit the town or moving from home to the beaches could be tiring if you’re poorly trained to walk and to go up and down the steps. But don't worry, the local buses "Mobility Amalfi Coast" runs in Positano!

Shopping in Positano center

Positano Fashion combines elegance and comfort in a classy and easy style and you certainly can't miss a few shopping-times! Also take a look at craftsman's shops, you will be amazed! Footwear is of high quality, especially sandals decorated with stones, or weaves in leather or marine items, are handmade by local artisans, to measure and according to the model you want. In addition, you can admire colourful ceramics: manual skills of expert craftsmen from Amalfi Coast is renowned all over the world. You might buy a colourful handmade souvenir to bring a piece of your holidays with you.

Restaurants suggestions

You can savour typical food while enjoying the magic panorama of Positano and the sparkle of the sun-kissed sea. Some restaurants I suggest are Da Vincenzo, Caffè Positano or Mediterraneo in the heart of Positano, in Viale Pasitea, reachable both on foot and by local bus. Caffè Positano Restaurant is also a great place to have a continental brunch or a typical italian breakfast. It has shuttle service that picks you up and then takes you home. La Tagliata Restaurant, on the hill overlooking the bay, has a comfortable shuttle service too. I recommend a reservation in advance!

Li Galli is an archipelago of three little islands off the Amalfi Coast between Capri Island and Positano, to which they belong administratively. Nowadays the archipelago is part of the Marine Protected Area of Punta Campanella. I can help you to arrange a boat trip to go snorkeling and visit the near fishing village Nerano. The name, Li Galli, is a reference to the greek sirens, dangerous mythological creatures who had appearance of bird-woman, playing musical instruments. They were said to live there and enchant the sailors with their bewitching voice, causing shipwrecks against those rocks.

Amalfi

Amalfi is one of the ancient Maritime Republics. Here you’ll be enchanted by the majestic St. Andrew Cathedral: a mixture of different architectural styles, its golden decorations, its arches and a magnificent long staircase. Inside, you can visit the Cloister of Paradise, an Arab-style construction dating back to the 12th century. I recommend visiting the historical Paper Mills and the Arts and Crafts Museum too. Walking through the town, don't miss a taste of delicious desserts made with local lemons such as Delizia al Limone or buy Limoncello liqueur, an excellent digestive, as souvenir.

Rent a scooter

Since Positano extends vertically, I recommend you rent a scooter to make your holidays truly relaxing. You'll certainly be freer to go wherever and whenever you want, even to move from home to the beach so that you won't be limited by the local bus schedule, often crowed in spring/summer time, or by the stairs which characterize the town, going always up and down. If you’re interested, contact me and I'll let you know rental pricelist.
