In ancient and medieval times, the whole city was surrounded by ramparts, and the passage was made possible by a dozen gates. Part of the ramparts is preserved on the stretch from the Double Gate to Giardini Square. The double doors, so called because of the two arched openings through which the inner courtyard from which was entered in the town, were built in the II-III centuries.
