Christian's schedules regular events like karaoke night, college night and a Thursday steak night, so the vibe is usually loud and festive. The menu at Christian's is simple, with various sizes of patties available on their signature burger, a handful of salads and seafood options, chicken sandwiches, and sides of fries and onion rings. from Houston Press - Saint Arnold Brewing Company is Texas’s oldest craft brewery, and a Houston institution. Public weekday and Saturday tours fill the brewery with a diverse crowd of beer lovers, and the tour hall’s taps often feature hard-to-find brews, with a view of the brewery floor. from Houtson Press- At first glance, a bakery-slash-hot dog stand is a strange idea. But Happy Fatz makes it work, combining the two into a charming little restaurant that's casual enough to incorporate both ideas. It doesn't feel odd to linger over a hot dog and an Italian soda in the old converted house, then follow up your meal with a miniature pineapple upside down cake or a cupcake to go. You can even add a shot of milk for $1. The dogs are better than the baked goods, though: all-beef, served in Slow Dough buns, with plenty of fresh and inventive toppings.

from ZAGAT - Dine in or drive through this pint-size Heights chicken shack from the F.E.E.D TX restaurant group (Liberty Kitchen, BRC) for natural fried chicken, inventive sandwiches, hearty sides and made-daily donuts. Portraits of rainbow-sprinkled pastries garnish the walls of a modern diner-esque layout with a sauce bar and floor-to-ceiling windows offering views of leafy streets.

from Houston Chronicle - With three strong chefs in the kitchen and a creative blend of Southern fare with the barbecue arts, Southern Goods from day one has felt and tasted like home. When the steel-gridded windows of this new-age Heights icehouse are flipped out to admit the mild Gulf Coast winter air, Houstonians belly up to the bar and fill the covered terrace picnic tables all the way out to the gravel-floored back yard. There, a lurid carnival pig mask leers, while a big black smoker sulks, belching woodsmoke. Think of Southern Goods as a modern species of diner, where the hungry can converge to grab a burger or an ad-hoc plate lunch, a salad or a grilled cheese sandwich, even a more substantial meal. Or think of it as a pub with a serious tap wall that happens to serve interesting food. Or as a place to hang while a local band livens up the back yard. It's elusive to define, yet it seems immediately familiar.

from Houston Press - A small, unassuming, family-run restaurant in the Heights, El Gallo de Jalisco is one of the few joints left in the area that's remained ungentrified. It's still cash-only, and very limited English is spoken inside, but you'll also find wonderfully authentic tacos, tortas and perhaps one of the finest chicken mole plates in town. The salsas aren't at all spicy, but they taste great with a cold glass of jamaica.

from Houston Press - This wonderfully festive, colorful and inexpensive neighborhood place has a spacious covered patio, efficient waitstaff and large portions of some of the best Tex-Mex in Houston. As an added bonus, it's easy to find: Just look for the brightest pinkest restaurant you've ever seen. from Houston Press - CRISP offers the perfect atmosphere for an after-work drink coupled with a solid wine and craft beer menu and friendly, attentive staff. Unfortunately, the food is inconsistent and confusing. Italian fare is reminiscent of overly seasoned Olive Garden items, while the pizza is too complicated to be appreciated for its crispy, stone-deck-fired crust. Steer clear of the creamy pasta dishes and overwrought pizza, and you'll probably find yourself enjoying a relaxing meal in the chic, modern space nestled in the Heights. Check out the daily specials, which knock a few bucks off the wine or beer during certain hours for an incredibly reasonable night out.

Walking into Retropolis the first time can be overwhelming. The store is packed to the gills with clothes, jewelry, hats and shoes that have somehow survived long enough from the '30s, '40s, '50s and on to end up in this gem of a place in the Heights. It's basically a vintage mini-mall with different vendors offering up their finds. We still get giddy seeing all the racks of clothes just waiting to be pawed through in search of a '40s-era rayon swing dress, a polka-dot bikini from the '60s or the perfect 1920s red velvet dressing gown. You can wade in and dig through the entire stock if you're so inclined, or — once you've learned your way around — you can just head straight for the booths that specialize in the eras of clothes you're after. You get what you pay for, so prices will go up based on the condition and rarity of the items, but they aren't astronomical, and you can score some amazing finds with a little luck and good timing.

from Houston Press - An island of cool stuff made with love and by hand amid an ocean of crap cranked out by indifferent machines (or wage slaves in brutal sweatshops), Hello Lucky, located in the Heights, stands as an extension of owner Teresa O'Connor's nurturing philosophy. August Antiques is a unique family business in the Historic Houston Heights offering many unusual finds from the New England states as well as upstate and western New York. We started in 1993 with just one room of what now fills the entire first floor of a 1920’s residential/commercial style red brick building which we believe to have been built as a grocery store. Within a year, we needed more room and expanded to the 1910’s corner building which was once Heights Gulf Service station. Originally, we started selling primitives and Victorian furniture from early New England estates. Now, our inventory is very diverse, including: Victorian, Mission, Empire, and primitive furniture, old and rare books, religious statuary and artifacts, period lighting, art pottery, vintage radios, fans from the 1910’s-1950’s, mid-century modern furnishings and way cool lamps, architectural salvage, etc. There is always something to interest almost anybody. When you come in remember that all of our lighting is ready to hang, our radios all work, and our fans are rewired and ready to use. We also restore and rewire fixtures, radios, and fans. Please stop in and see what new finds we have just brought in from our buying trip.

Please stop in and see what new finds we have just brought in from our buying trip.
from Houston Press - Of course Penzeys Spices is the best spice shop in the Houston area, you say. It's the only spice shop. Not true: There are specialty shops and grocers all over, some catering to only one type of cuisine. There are Chinese stores, Vietnamese purveyors, a Russian general store...we've seen them all in our culinary pursuits through Houston. But any spice you've ever dreamed of, you'll find at Penzeys. And then some. Think of the iterations of spice combos possible in this place! Being the only real game in town has not made them snooty, though. Pam and the other kind women who work there cater to you as if you are the only customer they've ever had.

My favorite way to see a movie... sitting in your own pod, fully automatic fully reclining seats into almost a bed, food, wine, drinks all delivered at the push of a button... very pricy but what an experience! You may never want to go to a normal theater again.
