Food Scene

Lille Spiseri is a tiny family driven restaurant that is based in the family oriented area Adamstuen. It has somewhat 8 tables, and the meny changes every week, always to perfection. The family is French and has an excellent eye for good wine and food.

A popular spot in Oslo, close to the beautiful park St. Hanshaugen. This restaurant has a knife and fork in the Michelin guide. It serves traditional Norwegian home cooked meals to a reasonable price. Between 4-6 pm they arrange family-friendly dinners, with lower prices and what we Norwegians calls "husmannskost". Traditional, low-brow food. After 6 pm is it more vibrant, with smaller dishes and a finer profile.

By far the best burger joint in Oslo, even though the city has a lot to offer in the burger department. The chefs at Kverneriet experiment with burgers like no other, and has everything from the classic cheeseburger to a Asian-styled burger. The triple cooked fries, especially the truffle and parsley ones, are to die for. It is super popular, so call in advance if you would like a table – and do it a few days in advance!

Close by the apartment is a great little place called Cru. It is situated at Vibes gate, approximatley 5 minutes away from Jacob Aalls gt. The restaurant is a fusion between French and British cuisine, but does not meet your expectations of your typical greasy-deep-fried-across-the-pond-dishes. It is clean, well balanced and sophisticated gourmet, to a good price. The chef Max is British and often goes around in the restaurant talking to the customers. The venue is small, and is split into the cellar, where it is more low key with tapas dishes and main dishes and the first floor which is a three course-menu and more expensive. On Saturdays they do serve Fish'n'chips, which is excellent!

Drinks & Nightlife

A super cosy and small bar right by the park St. Hanshaugen. It is a joint bicycle repair shop and bar, with a lot of cycling enthusiasts hanging around. For a live screening of Tour de France during the summer, this is your place. You can bring your own food, pizzas, sushi – whatever, and the bear is great. My favorite spot is in front of the fireplace, because it is almost never too hot [in Norway] for a fire place not to be appropriate!

Himkok is a speakeasy close to the popular spot Torggata in Oslo. As the description implies, you have to know where to go – the quite spacious night club and bar is hidden behind a small door, and you have to ring the bell. Inside it is a "distillery", with waiters in the lab coats, making drinks to perfection. They also has a backyard with a cider bar and a tacos station. One of the best cocktail bars in the city

Arts & Culture

One of the must sees in Oslo is the collection of Edvard Munch at the Munch museum. Situated in the East of Oslo, in a vibrant and up-coming area called Tøyen, the museum looks over the park right by the square of Tøyen. Edvard Munchs paintings are both to be found in the National Museum and the Munch museum (Screem for instance is at the National Museum, while as Madonna is at the Munch museum). The Munch museum is ingenious in their collaborations though, which often mixes Munch with modern, famous and current curators.

Essentials

The vegetable shops at the vibrant immigrant area Grønland is the cheapest place to by groceries in Oslo. The area also has excellent kebabs and fabric stores. On Saturdays the whole street turns into a market as well!
