Immerse yourself in history as our guest at the National Register listed Stone House Mansion (1757). Home to Revolutionary War, French and Indian War, and War of 1812 officers, statesmen, and Congressmen. Close to Historic Shepherdstown, Harpers Ferry, & Antietam National Battlefield. The apartment has everything you will need for a comfortable stay. The basement level apartment is ideal for couples, families, solo adventurers, and business travelers (available for extended stay).
The apartment in the basement level has two bedrooms, one with a queen bed and one with a single bed with an electric fireplace, living room with big colonial fireplace (non-functioning) and a TV and a dining table, bathroom with claw-foot tub/shower, and a kitchen with all amenities and washer and dryer and dishwasher. Historically, the living room in the basement level was a kitchen where the large fireplace was used for cooking. The queen bedroom is air-conditioned in the summer. The rest of the basement apartment is not air-conditioned but stays fairly cool in the summer. Next to Bedroom 2 is a dressing room/storage room that also has a sitting area and a double sofa bed for occasional company. This house is steeped in American history. The following is condensed from the National Register of Historic Places listing: The Stone House Mansion was constructed in 1757. It is one of the oldest stone structures in Berkeley County. The Stone House Mansion is significant for its association with the Hite vs. Fairfax lawsuit, which revolved around the question of whether colonial government or English government had the authority to grant land. The suit is significant in the interpretation of the arguments and as a precursor of the concepts and concerns that eventually led to the Revolution. It was for these very beliefs that the colonies rebelled. The stone house is mentioned in the suit and is included in a survey conducted as part of the evidence. Stone House Mansion is significant for its association with Captain John Strode, who constructed Stone House Mansion. Captain John Strode fought with the Continental Army and was the founder of Strode’s Station in Kentucky. Stone House Mansion is significant for its association with General Adam Stephen, who founded the city of Martinsburg. Stephen was second-in-command to George Washington in the French and Indian War and fought under George Washington in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War with the rank of Major General. After the war, he served as a delegate to the 1788 Virginia Convention and spoke persuasively in favor of adopting the U.S. Constitution. Stephen purchased Stone House Mansion from Captain John Strode in September 1789. The land was to be inherited by his daughter, Ann Stephen. Ann Stephen was married twice. Her first marriage in 1779 was to Captain Alexander Spotswood Dandridge, who was second cousin to Martha Washington and grandson of Virginia Governor Alexander Spotswood. Captain Dandridge served as an Aide-de-Camp on the staff of General George Washington during the Revolutionary War. Captain Alexander Spotswood Dandridge died in 1785. He and Ann had one son, Adam Stephen Dandridge. Ann’s second marriage in 1787 was to Major Moses Hunter, Revolutionary War veteran and member of the Virginia House of Delegates. Stone House Mansion was inherited by Major Moses Hunter’s son, Lieutenant David Hunter, who was killed at the battle of Williamsburg on the St. Lawrence River in the War of 1812. Stone House Mansion was then inherited by the granddaughter of General Adam Stephen, Anne Hunter. Anne Hunter married Captain Henry St. George Tucker, who fought in the War of 1812 and was a U.S. Congressman, a member of the Virginia Senate, lawyer, judge, and law professor at the University of Virginia. Tucker County, West Virginia was named for Henry St. George Tucker. Stone House Mansion is significant for its association with James Monroe VanMetre and his son Isaac David Sylvester VanMetre, both prominent businessmen and farmers from a very prominent early settlement family in the Shenandoah Valley.
This quiet area is part of what was once a large historic farm, but now only 10 acres of it remain. Stone House Mansion is within a 30-minute drive to historic destinations in Harpers Ferry, WV, Winchester, VA, and Sharpsburg, MD. Visit the nearby Charles Town Racetrack and Casino. Also within a 30-minute drive visitors can enjoy outdoor activities, including hiking, fishing, whitewater rafting, and biking or hiking the C&O Canal and Appalachian Trail. It is convenient to the highway. The bike path between Charles Town and Martinsburg West Virginia borders the property. The State has placed a historical marker about Stone House Mansion on the bike path! The Coast Guard facility, IRS Computing Center, and V.A. Medical Center are within a mile from here. A convenience store and gas station is a half-mile from the house.

We live on a solar powered organic farm in the Shenandoah Valley. We raise chickens, goats, pigs and bees. We have a large garden and small orchard. Our goal is to feed ourselves in a healthy, sustainable way.
We live in a stone house that was built in 1833. The guest cottage is much newer and has lots of modern conveniences...air conditioning, radiant floor heat in the bathroom, cable and WiFi. Please note that the guest cottage has dedicated WiFi, but it’s satellite WiFi, so you won’t be able to stream.

Our four room cottage is the perfect spot for a summer dip in the creek swimming hole, enjoying the fall foliage, a winter getaway in front of the fire, or just hanging out on the screened porch listening to the rain or the birds.
Just 1.5 hours from Silver Spring, and under 2 hours from DC or Baltimore is our cozy four room cottage with a covered, screened porch and an open deck. Indoors is a livingroom/kitchen space, a bathroom and two bedrooms. (One with double bed and one with twin bunk beds) The living room sofa also converts to a full bed. Additional kids could be accommodated by camping on the carpeted bedroom floor. Envisioned as a retreat, there is no landline, spotty cell phone service, no TV and no internet, but there is a wood burning fireplace indoors and a fire pit outside. Not totally immune to creature comforts, we are fully electrified. We have hot water, electric baseboard heat, two window unit air conditioners and a full kitchen with fridge, stove and oven. (No microwave, though) The house is very bright, with windows all around. The living room has two sliding glass doors - one to the deck and one to the covered porch. A basement room is becoming a game room. So far we have bumper pool and magnetic darts.
We're located at the end of a dirt road and on the edge of the community property in a development originally planned as summer homes (but now largely year round residents). From the cottage you can barely see any evidence of other homes - just lush woods. There's a feeder stream that crosses our property (fun for finding crawdads) then joins with Back Creek. We have a community access point to Back Creek - a five to ten minute walk along trails or a dirt road. From there you can swim in the deep swimming hole, put in a kayak (bring your own kayak), fish, or just watch the water go by. A few minutes walk away in the "development" is a rudimentary basketball court. It's clearly seen better days but still works for shooting a few hoops. The surrounding area is chock full of apple and peach orchards. As you drive in you'll see lots of picturesque farms with horses, cows or goats. A few minutes by car down the road is Orr's farm where you can buy locally grown fruits and veggies. They also do "pick your own" for strawberries, cherries, raspberries, blackberries, vegetables, grapes, pumpkins and even flowers! You may also get to see the bison that they raise in a pasture next to the market!

  • Vacker & ren stuga bekvämt beläget i Winchester, VA.

Only 90 miles from DC (2 hours). The house is situated at the end of a 3 mile quiet road on the top of a mountain. Stay and hang the whole time or go out and enjoy great restaurants and sites. A relaxing and private retreat with view.
The house is mostly made up of windows. The view is amazing and we built the house to be able to see it from almost every room. A cook's kitchen, multiple hanging out areas, and hundreds of wooded acres to explore. The large deck overlooks the valley below. 6 cleared acres of rugged meadow and the rest wooded. 4 total bedrooms and 5 total beds: 2 bedrooms with full sized beds, 1 master with a queen bed, and another bedroom with 2 twin beds (Trundle). Total of 3 bathrooms - 2 with soaking tubs and 1 other full bathroom. One guest had a hard time finding the 5th bed - it is located under the 4th - a trundle. The master bedroom has its own bathroom and shower and an amazing view of the sunrise. 2 living rooms and 1 dining room. The dining room table has six chairs; there are 8 additional chairs in the bedroom closet off of kitchen (recently added) if needed. We also have a charcoal grill and large coffee maker (recently added by popular demand). We have 8 adirondack chairs (recently added); we have a table and two chairs on the upper deck.
Historic Berkeley Springs, WV, featuring natural hot spring baths frequented by George Washington, is 45 mins away. 30 minutes away is arty town of Shepherdstown, WV. Both offer restaurants and shopping, and are perfect day trips if you can pull yourself away from the natural beauty surrounding you. We love the restaurant 'Domestic' in Shepherdstown ((website hidden)). Martinsburg, WV is 10 minutes away, featuring a great little farmers market (Orr’s), grocery store (Martin’s), and other amenities.

Immerse yourself in history as our guest at the National Register listed Stone House Mansion (1757). Home to Revolutionary War and War of 1812 officers, statesman, and Congressmen. Close to Historic Shepherdstown, Harpers Ferry, & Antietam National Battlefield. It has everything you will need for a comfortable stay. Our house is ideal for couples, families, solo adventurers, business travelers (available for extended stay). 1 to 6 bedrooms available- priced per bedroom. Group deals available.
This paneled bedroom with a full bed on the first floor once functioned as the farm office for the VanMetre's dairy and renowned Country Ham business. The knotty pine paneling is said to come from shipping crates that transported milk and dairy products produced on the farm back and forth to the soldiers fighting in Europe in World War I. This room is named for the Hunter family. Major Moses Hunter married General Adam Stephen's daughter Ann. The recent generations of VanMetres were widely-known for their country ham business.
This is part of what was once a large historic farm, but now only 10 acres of it remain. You will probably see some chickens and cows. Stone House Mansion is within a 30-minute drive to historic destinations in Harpers Ferry, WV, Winchester, VA, and Sharpsburg, MD. Visit the nearby Charles Town Racetrack and Casino. Also within a 30-minute drive visitors can enjoy outdoor activities, including hiking, fishing, whitewater rafting, and biking or hiking the C&O Canal or Appalachian Trail. It is convenient to the highway and less than a mile to a supermarket. The new Route 9 bike trail between Charles Town and Martinsburg, WV borders the property. The State has placed a historical marker about Stone House Mansion on the bike path!
