A short drive into Baldwin, located a short way past the Bear City dumpsite, sits a quiet mountain trail, surrounded by pines and open spaces. White crosses line a circle and tells a story of the old mountain mining town of Doble. ( Now called Baldwin Lake)
In the distance, you see an old stamp mill. About 25 marked graves sit in the little cemetery that served the town mining town. The names of those interred here, except for one child, are a mystery. Crosses were placed here by Boy Scouts during the 1940s.
The actual cemetery was up the trail a bit but was moved here due to vandalism and grave robbers. This is also a geocache site. So be sure to leave an offering for the inhabitants of the area! You can continue up the road to the original stamp mill site and enjoy the view of Balwin Lake.

The Eye of God is a quartz dome that is a local landmark in the Baldwin Lake area of Big Bear City. It is a megalith which is a sacred tribal landmark for the Serrano people who lived in the region 2,000 years ago. The Serranos worshipped the dome. which they referred to as the eye of their creator Kruktat (Kokitach). It is where Serrano's creation narrative takes place. The Serrano Indians still hold the place sacred and believe God’s great spirit remains here.
Legend says God was watching to make sure the Indians treated one another well. Originally a full-dome, sadly- it was dynamited during the 1940’s.
In the late 1800s, Spanish missionaries named the native people of Big Bear, Serrano, meaning “mountaineer” or “highlander.” Since earliest times, however, they called themselves the Yuhaviatam, “People of the Pines.”
According to legend, during the cremation, the eye of Kruktut flew out and became the giant snow quartz megalith known as Aapahunane’t, or God’s Eye. Legend says that the unusually large white outcropping is God watching to make sure the People treat each other well. The quartz outcropping was originally a full-dome, but was dynamited in the search for gold.
The Eye of God Trail is a 1.8-mile roundtrip hike to Eye of God, which has its trailhead on Burns Canyon Road and is located near the 156-acre Baldwin Lake Ecological Preserve, which includes a unique pebble plain plant community, as well as a vernal wet meadow habitat, significant as a wintering site for bald eagles.
Today this sacred space is used by the locals for yoga, meditation, and grounding. Many believe The Eye of God still holds healing powers and sacred energy of the great Serrano ancestors. Offerings of Quartz, amethyst, and other sacred stones can be found around the area often as a sign of peace and respect. This is one of many views of the local valley. Located off Vale Rd. In Baldwin Lake.
