Food scene

The motto of MBW bakery is : “ an apron is a cape on backwards”. The young people who work there have served up thousands of meals following the 2 category 5 hurricanes in 2017. Now in the pandemic they have again acted as our everyday heroes. When they are not making extraordinary efforts on behalf of the community, they continue to serve great baked goods, coffee and bushtea everyday for residents and visitors alike.

Gladys’s adds such a flavorful element to any day in Charlotte Amalie. Authentic West Indian dishes are prepared well, and, they are served with friendly island style. For many of us locals, this is where we get our comfort food after long trips to cold climates. If you are interested in food culture, take the opportunity to ask your waitress about provisions or kallaloo... You can begin a journey of discovery that starts with your tastebuds, but, which takes you Africa, Europe and back to the Caribbean. There are also American favorites like “French” toast and burgers etc. Gladys’s is open for breakfast and lunch.

The food is excellent and the host and hostess are gracious! There aren’t many tables in this intimate Frenchtown favorite, so, be sure to call ahead to make a reservation.

Shopping

YHG is a surprising mix of high end and grassroots at the water’s edge. The area was originally a beach ( Long Bay), but, it has been developed into a marina which berths many mega yachts. Guests walking through this beautifully lit area of the harbor have compared it to the French Riviera. ( I have never been to the French Riviera, but, YHG is beautiful.) The surprise is that you will find Mama’s Shack here! Carmen -(Mama) - makes great local food, and healthy, delicious, locally-sourced fresh juices. Next to Mama’s Shack you will find Jolly’s Roots and Culture booth with handmade local crafts under a passionfruit arbor:-) You will also find Blue 11 a local gourmet restaurant, Enkai sushi, Bad Ass Coffee, Sugar &Spice, shopping, bars, bicycles for rent, and a walkway along the waters edge to Havensight/ town.
