Nashville Must-Try Food

Nashville hot chicken is a tourist attraction and has been for over two decades. Ever since former Nashville Mayor Bill Purcell popularized hot chicken, people from all over the country (and world for that matter) have sought out the unforgiving yet totally delicious dish! As a native Nashvillian, I see countless iterations of the dish that are simply NOT authentic Nashville hot chicken. If you're visiting Nashville, you might as well get the real deal. That's why I wholeheartedly, 100% recommend 400 Degrees Hot Chicken to any and all people visiting Music City. Owned and operated by Aqui Hines, 400 Degrees is the most authentic and flavorful hot chicken you will find in Nashville. Crispy exterior, juicy interior, and all around excellent customer service are why 400 Degrees is at the top of my list for Nashville food-to-try. Just be sure when you eat it, you don't have much planned for the following day ;). And order your food an hour before you want to eat it (everything is cooked to order). 400 Degrees is a bit far from the Airbnb at 25 minutes, but it’s totally worth the drive!

Taking vegan food to another level, Wild Cow has been a Nashville staple since opening in 2008. Combining the best faux-meat proteins (tofu, tempeh, seitan) with local greens and a variety of sauces, Wild Cow is simply the best vegan restaurant in Nashville. Even meat-eaters will be impressed. Get the Buffalo Bean and Greens with tofu over rice (my personal recommendation).

If you’re looking for a funky spot to grab brunch with a laid back vibe, look no further than Phat Bites. It’s not gourmet by any means, but it’s cozy and is a great place to go just to hang out or get a bite to eat before a long drive back home. It’s much better than Waffle House or any cheap alternatives you’ll see along the side of the interstate. It’s not just a breakfast spot. It has a full bar and local bands play there all the time. If you’re looking for a super low key night where the locals hang out, this might be your best bet.

The John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge, formerly the Shelby Street Pedestrian Bridge, connects downtown Nashville to the residential suburbs of East Nashville. It was built from 1907-09 and was originally named the Sparkman Street Bridge. The county employed Howard M. Jones, Chief Office Engineer of the Nashville, Chattanooga, and St. Louis Railway, to design and supervise the construction. Jones worked with local contractor Foster and Creighton Company and Gould Contracting Company of Louisville. The bridge contains 48 spans including four steel trusses and two reinforced concrete trusses. Spans over the old Tennessee Central Railroad tracks (now CSX) are the only concrete trusses identified in Tennessee. The bridge was closed to automobile traffic in 1998 and has been restored for pedestrian use, providing outstanding views of the river and downtown skyline.

Directly across First Avenue is Riverfront Park, created in the early 1980s to commemorate Nashville’s river history. In the 1780s, Nashville’s first settlers came both over land and via the river to settle here along the Cumberland River. Those settlers built a two-acre fort around a freshwater spring and tucked among the cedar trees on the river bluff. A 1930 replica of that first settlement, Fort Nashborough, stands north of Riverfront Park in Bicentennial Park. Also located in Bicentennial Park is Alan LeQuire’s statue of Timothy Demonbreun, an early French Canadian fur trader who settled here, and Puryear Mims’s sculpture of town founders James Robertson and John Donelson. Across the river, but highly visible from Broadway, sits Alice Aycock’s monumental sculpture Ghost Ballet for the East Bank Machineworks, installed in 2007. The artist’s concept combined elements from the industrial heritage of the east bank as well as the modern driving energy of today’s city, and symbolically connects the east bank to the west, unifying the city. *Reconstruction of Fort Nashborough is in process: creating a modern interpretation of the frontier settlement.
