Ortygia The tiny island of Ortygia (the historic heart of Syracuse) is linked to the mainland by a bridge. In Greek mythology it was said to have been ruled by Calypso, the sea nymph who detained Ulysses for seven years. Measuring only 1km by 500m, it’s difficult to get lost and the best way to visit is by serendipity, on foot. Covering over 2,500 years of history, there’s a huge variation of architectural styles from Greek to Roman remains and from Medieval-Norman to Baroque. In recent years, a lot of sensitive restoration work has been in progress, recapturing some of the island’s former glory.
