In 1981, the preserve was designated as an International Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, and in 2001 the American Bird Conservancy named it a Globally Important Bird Area. The preserve has more than 40 miles of hiking trails and is an ideal place for birdwatching enthusiasts.
