Sightseeing

Lovely walk down the Mells River and a chance to see some industrial history from the 1700's with the remnants of the iron and tool sharpening works, now swallowed up by the forest. Can be muddy after rain! It is reached by following the road from the village shop that follows the Mells River eastwards. Please feel free to ask for details.

Mells is a village with much historic interest and many artistic connections. A short walk around Mells, taking in some of the historic buildings frothing with history, reveals some of its past. There are a large number of listed buildings in the designated conservation area: New Street , Built in 1470, was designed as a model of mediaeval town planning. The Talbot coaching in, with its original cobbled yard, arched entrance and stables has scarcely been altered. There is a mediaeval lock up on Gay Street and the tithe barn in Selwood Street. Works by Lucians, Burne-Jones, Munnings and William Nicholson, particular within the church and churchyard can be seen. Siegfried Sassoon, the war poet, is buried in the churchyard next to his friend Ronald Knox, crime writer and translator of the Holy Bible. The Tudor Manor house is itself an extension of a 15th century manor belonging to the abbey of Glastonbury since before the Norman conquests. The tale of Little Jack Horner is said to originate at Mells Manor.

A viewing platform to see into the quarry is breath-taking. 30 minute walk across the southern hill to Mells giving a good view of the village. Starting from the bridge by the shop there is a public footpath heading south up the hill, taking you across the road and then along the edge of the quarry (tricky to follow on OS but look closely for track). You come out eventually through a farm onto a lane, where you turn left (south) and the viewing platform is located at the start of the wooded bridleway, at the following: Using "What Three Words": sweetener alarming sandbags Long/Lat: 51.231496 , -2.4014009

The ancient isle of Avalon, legend has it these were the stomping grounds of King Arthur. The Tor is a steep heart pumping walk. Nearby cafes serve simple menus. The Town of Glastonbury is an interesting visit full of all types of spiritual shops.

Food scene

One of the best eateries around, luckily in Mells, must book in advance! Known for incredible dishes, drinks and it's anachronistic bar and buildings. Open Wed-Sun. Look out for the old village jail! if you walk to The Talbot by crossing the river and along Gay Street. If the website says fully booked, it's sometimes worth calling them.

The Old Pharmacy is a wine bar, bistro and grocery store housed in a 500 year old building that was previously a Pharmacy. A daily changing blackboard menu offers a selection of small dishes to share using homegrown ingredients from our farm and the tiny adjacent shop sells grocery items to take away as well as Roundhill coffee, organic wines and local cider.
