Wickham (2.8 miles) http://www.wickhamsquare.co.uk Wickham is an enchanting town, steeped in history, full of character and surrounded by the beautiful countryside of Hampshire’s Meon Valley. Wickham has a wide and well-proportioned square, lined with historic buildings and is designated a conservation area. The earliest history of Wickham Village is unknown, but we can assume that it has Stone Age origins with the first settlers attracted to the site as a ford across the River Meon. The Romans established a settlement at Wickham and probably built the first bridge over the river, the village being on the road from the Roman centres of Chichester and Winchester. Although only a stone’s throw away from the larger towns of Winchester, Southampton and Portsmouth, Wickham offers the visitor (and the resident!) something quite different; intriguing, independent shops, an enviable variety of eateries, serene water meadows, fascinating historical buildings and for walkers, cyclists and horse riders, the Meon Valley Trail. Independent shops include: Heming & Co, J’Adore La Maison, Bay Tree Walk and Warwick Arcade contain more shops and café’s. Chesapeake Mill is a good place to mooch as it has interesting house accessories and antiques, and a vegan café. There are nail salons and hairdressers in Wickham, with many café’s, restaurants and pubs. Mole Valley Country Stores is just around the corner from the main square. Parking is free in the long term car park (Station Close, off Mill Lane), and free for the first 30 minutes in the Square. There is an EV charging point. You can walk, cycle or ride to Wickham along the Meon Valley Trail – or drive in 5 minutes. Turn left out of the gates and keep going until you get to Wickham crossroad -turning right into the centre of the village -. St Nicholas’s church is on your left. The Square, Wickham, Hampshire Set your SatNav for PO17 5JQ Walking: Through the gate and onto the Meon Valley Trail at the back of the garden. TURN RIGHT and keep going. (2.8 miles)

It’s known for medieval Winchester Cathedral, with its 17th-century Morley Library, the Winchester Bible and a Norman crypt. Nearby are the ruins of Wolvesey Castle and the Winchester City Mill, a working 18th-century corn mill. The Great Hall of Winchester Castle houses the medieval round table linked to King Arthur. Popular for its bustling shopping streets, its floral summer season and quirky open air events, Winchester is most well-known for its eleventh century Cathedral and for the Great Hall which for over 700 years has housed the mysterious King Athur's Round Table. Winchester College is the oldest continuously running school in the country. The college has been used as a location to film a number of blockbusters such as Harry Potter and Les Misérables. The college offers tours of it's historical buildings and fascinating grounds. Heading out of the city you'll fine the Hospital of St Cross, a medieval almshouse, which still offers the Wayfarer's Dole to travellers as it has done for more than eight centuries. Winchester's many bars, traditional pubs and restaurants make eating out a pleasure, and there are pretty riverside walks past tranquil water meadows. The city sits on the edge of the South Downs National Park and is the start place for the famous South Downs Way. For fabulous views of the city and the surrounding area, take a stroll up to St Catherine's Hill. A short distance from the city is Winchester Science Centre & Planetarium. This Family friendly attraction has 100 hands-on indestructible activities for inquisitive children, space zone and planetarium! Also nearby is Hampshire's largest animal attraction, Marwell Wildlife. This 140-acre park is home to over 250 exotic and endangered species in beautiful, landscaped surroundings. In the nearby market town of Alresford you’ll find the famous Mid Hants Railway ‘Watercress Line’. Places to visit and things to do
Southwick Estate: https://www.southwickestate.co.uk/ Southwick means ‘south dairy farm’. Over time this farm grew into a small village which includes homes, farms, businesses, shops, public houses, churches and woodland. The milk at Meon Valley Milk Vending Machine at Farm Shop comes from Southwick Dairy Farm. The Augustinian monks from Portchester founded Southwick Priory in the mid 12th century. In 1539, following the Dissolution, Henry VIII sold the priory and its assets to John Whyte. The Estate is still owned and managed by the descendants of John Whyte. Southwick House was requisitioned by the Government during WWII but much of the rest of the original Estate remains intact. o Southwick Brewhouse: https://www.southwickbrewhouse.co.uk/history/ Rear of the Golden Lion Pub and does delivery. Suthwyk Ales was started by Hampshire farmer Martin Bazeley in 2000. This was the first farm diversification project started by Martin, a tenant farmer in the village of Southwick. When farming came under pressure due to low milk and cereal prices at the time, Martin started to look at the other assets of the farm. One of which was the ability to grow award winning malting barley on the chalky slopes of Portsdown Hill, overlooking Portsmouth. Suthwyk Ales is unique from other Hampshire brewed beers, as the only producers to grow the barley right here in Hampshire. Our beers all have a unique story to tell, they are patriotic, truly local and most importantly, delicious and refreshing. Brewed by the expert brewers at Bowman Ales in Droxford.

Bucklers Hard https://www.bucklershard.co.uk/ On the banks of the Beaulieu River, in the heart of the New Forest, you will find the unspoilt haven of Buckler’s Hard which remains untouched by the passage of time. Originally a shipbuilding village with over 50 wooden ships being built for the Royal Navy, including the vessels Agamemnon, Euryalus and Swiftsure, all of which fought at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. During the Second World War, Buckler’s Hard became a motor torpedo base and, further downstream, sections of the Mulberry harbours were constructed in the old oyster beds in preparation for the D-Day landings. In the post-war years, visitors quickly returned to the river and in 1963 the Buckler’s Hard Maritime Museum was opened in what had been the New Inn, ‘to serve as a memorial to those men of Buckler’s Hard who built men-of-war’. Today, Buckler’s Hard is still a ‘living’ village and many of the people who live and work here are engaged in recreation and tourism. The Master Builders Hotel and Pub. https://www.hillbrookehotels.co.uk/the-master-builders/eat-drink/ At the end of the Buckler’s Hard high street you’ll find The Master Builder's House Hotel. The Master Builder's is now open for outside dining. Choose from seating in the new restaurant terrace marquee or on the garden terrace tables. Please call 01590 616253 or email enquiries@themasterbuilders.co.uk to find out more. We love this pub as it is so friendly in a lovely setting with great food and dog friendly.

Goodwood Motor Circuit, Chichester, PO18 0PH https://www.goodwood.com/motorsport/motor-circuit/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=goodwood-circuit Goodwood Circuit is a historic venue for both two- and four-wheeled motorsport in the United Kingdom. The 3.8 kilometres circuit is situated near Chichester, West Sussex, close to the south coast of England, on the estate of Goodwood House, and completely encircles Chichester/Goodwood Airport. Goodwood Motor Circuit is an all year round business, hosting events, track days and driving experiences. Festival of Speed: 23rd to 26 June 2022 https://www.goodwood.com/motorsport/festival-of-speed/ The world's greatest celebration of motorsport and car culture! Held in the beautiful parkland surrounding Goodwood House, the Festival of Speed is motorsport's ultimate summer garden party, an intoxicating celebration of the world's most glamorous sport. Nowhere else will you get so close to the cars and bikes as they blast up the Hillclimb track; nowhere else will you enjoy such unrestricted access to the machines and the drivers who made them famous. Goodwood Revival: 16th to 18th September 2022 https://www.goodwood.com/motorsport/goodwood-revival/ Recreating the glamour of motor racing as it used to be, the Motor Circuit comes alive for the Revival, both on and off the historic track. The only historic race meeting to be staged entirely in period dress, the Revival sees a return to the halcyon days of Goodwood as the spiritual home of British motor racing. It’s a celebration of bygone days, vintage fashion and wheel-to-wheel racing around this classic circuit, which remains unchanged since its heyday. Really popular, but the traffic getting to Goodwood is pretty bad on the event days.

Our beers all have a unique story to tell, they are patriotic, truly local and most importantly, delicious and refreshing. Brewed by the expert brewers at Bowman Ales in Droxford.

Beaulieu is home to Lord Montagu's Estate, The National Motor Museum and The Montagu Arms. Bucklers Hard is nearby. The Montagu Arms Hotel, Beaulieu, Hampshire, SO42 4ZL https://www.montaguarmshotel.co.uk/ In the car capitol of the New Forest, is an English classic hotel, with an award winning Terrace restaurant and Monty’s Inn (Pub). Lovely garden too. National Motor Museum https://www.beaulieu.co.uk/ Lord Montagu’s world- famous motor museum. See over 280 vehicles in the museum and also The World of Top Gear and On Screen Cars. There is the Palace to look round and lovely grounds, which you can see from the Monorail. It is a great day out for everyone.

Burley: Tea rooms, gift shops, art galleries - even a cider farm! Burley features everything you would expect from a traditional New Forest village. Oozing old world charm, with ponies and cattle roaming around the village and pretty thatched cottages, Burley has remained untouched by time. Here you will find a traditional butchers, village stores and cosy inns. Don’t forget to look out for the New Forest ponies and cattle as they roam freely around the village. Although these animals might look and act wild, they are in fact all owned by locals using their commoner’s rights. People have lived in the Burley area since prehistoric times. Over twenty Bronze Age burial mounds are found near to the village and on the edge of Burley, at Castle Hill, is the site of an Iron Age hillfort.

The Shoe, Exton. 01489 877 526. theshoeexton.co.uk. Beaches and Marine Life

Beaches to visit and marina type places
Hill Head Beach PO14 3LU: https://www.thebeachguide.co.uk/south-west-england/hampshire/hill-head.htm Set across the Solent from the Isle of Wight is a lengthy stretch of shingle beach backed by a tarmac walkway. Like much of this stretch of coast the beach is divided up by wooden groynes. These offer some protection from the erosive forces of longshore drift, helping to keep the shingle in place. Hill Head beach is popular with watersports enthusiasts offering good sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing. It is also a popular spot for fishing. To the western end of the beach is a small harbour, located at the mouth of the River Meon where it enters the Solent. Just beyond is the Titchfield Haven National Nature Reserve, which is home to a vast array of birdlife. Dogs are not allowed on the main part of the beach from May 1st to September 30th. There is a small part of the beach to the west of the main car park where dogs can go all year. Dogs are also allowed on the promenade all year, but must be on a lead. I like going here and combining with Titchfield Nature reserve and going to the Haven Cafe for tea or an ice cream

The sand dunes at West Wittering are not far away and many other beaches, plus regular car and pedestrian ferries to the Isle of Wight. West Wittering can get very busy in the Summer, but Bracklesham Bay much less so. West Wittering is much prettier though and has the dunes. Bracklesham and East Wittering have sandy beaches but not very picturesque. Julia was brought up in Bracklesham so can advise on how to try and avoid the traffic.
