Things to do on Amelia Island

City/town information

Fernandina Beach is a quaint small town with lots of charm. The downtown area is filled with stores and restaurants. Free parking makes it easy to wander and shop. Make a trip down to the end of town to watch one of our breathtaking sunsets. Or just lay back and enjoy the quietness, uncrowded beaches, or explore all the nature the island has to offer at it's rivers, marshes, and green-ways.

Sightseeing

Located between downtown and the beach is a Civil war state park that is not only historic, but the drive into the park is beautifully lined with draping live oaks. Plan to visit on the first weekend of every month when the staff bring to life what the soldiers would have been wearing and doing. The park includes the fort, as well as swimming, hiking, biking, fishing, or taking in all the wildlife there (gopher tortoises, painted buntings, deer, opossums, racoons, and several kinds of birds). Shelling and shark-tooth hunting are also popular activities.

If you want to experience nature, bird-watching, fishing, hiking, or enjoy photography, Big Talbot Island State Park is a must. It is a 25 minute drive down A1A, toward Jacksonville, but the ride is easy. The beach usually sparse with people. There are picnic areas in pavilions that overlook the water. A visit to Boneyard Beach is a must! The beach is unique in that it has salt-washed skeletons of live oak and cedar trees that once grew near the shore. This not only offers photographers their "perfect shot" but the beach is a serene place to walk among the fallen trees. There is another state park that also is a beautiful place to visit - Little Talbot Island State Park. Little Talbot has 5 miles of wide, pristine beaches that also usually have few visitors.

Quirky little "hole in the wall" pizza restaurant that is a local pick. The pizza is delicious and the Gorgonzola salad is one of our favorites.

Don't forget the sunscreen and beach towels!

There are many access points to get onto our beautiful beaches. The easiest way from our town-home, is to walk directly across the street to "Access 31". If you prefer to go to another part of the beach, you can drive up the main road in front of the town-home complex (S. Fletcher Ave) and you will find additional access points up and down the road. There are two accesses that have bathrooms/showers if you need those (Main Beach and next to Sliders Restaurant) - both of these are north of our town-home.
