A 10 minute drive away, Jockey's Ridge is absolutely worth visiting. It includes the tallest active sand dune system in the eastern U.S. On the back side, there's sound access, and there are woods with beautiful trails along the edge of the park.

Located in south Nags Head, Bodie Island Lighthouse is closer than the lighthouses in Corolla and Buxton. It is 156 feet tall and gives you amazing views from the top.

Duck is great for dining (although you'll need reservations in the summer) and has a mile-long boardwalk over the sound where you can walk and watch the sunset.

Piers
Avalon Pier is a historic fishing pier with a bar and some simple food options. It's a local favorite, and on a clear day it's fun to walk to the end of the pier and see fish swimming below. And if you're into fishing, it's a great place to go too!

If walking/biking to the beach, always cross at crosswalk
The main road gets very busy in the summer and is not safe to cross outside of the crosswalks. You might see people do this, and it's extremely unsafe. *Always* cross at Helga St or 5th St crosswalks if you are not driving.
