In the centre of Nidderdale this idyllic market town stretches up the hillside. Pateley Bridge is the perfect base for walking, cycling, exploring or just enjoying a day in the countryside. The town boasts historic buildings, delicious food from local producers and a history stretching back for centuries. Pateley Bridge has an idyllic and award-winning high street that looks as though it was designed with postcards in mind. Here you will find locally produced food and drink, gifts and keepsakes as well as traditional Yorkshire hospitality in cafes, pubs and tearooms. The little courtyards and ginnels that lead off the high street contain curiosities and gems that are part of the town’s charm. Many of the town’s historical buildings have found new uses, from the workhouse that now houses a museum and craft workshops, to the Methodist chapel that is now a theatre. At the foot of the high street, you will find the River Nidd. At this point in its journey, the river has gained some size since its birth 15 miles up the valley. Here the Nidd alternates between shallow babbling activity and slower wider and more peaceful sections. With riverside walks up and downstream, the Nidd is great for exploring nature and spotting wildlife. The river is home to kingfishers, dippers and otters as well as many other birds and mammals. Pateley Bridge shopping The heart of Nidderdale AONB Pateley Bridge is located in the heart of Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and is the perfect base for a day out in Yorkshire’s great outdoors. Whether on foot, on road bike or mountain bike you will find climbs, views and discovery when you set out to explore the Nidderdale landscape. As you explore Nidderdale it is impossible not to stumble across the footprints of the past. Victorian industry found a range of useful minerals and resources in the valley. From the railways that once reached all the way to the top of the alley, to the abandoned mines and quarries that can be found in almost every small valley or hillside – the landscape is a museum to the history of Nidderdale. With a short heritage trail, and a number of points of interest this dales town rewards inquisitive exploration while the large play area and recreation ground offers space for young ones to burn off energy. The Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) forms the south eastern part of the Yorkshire Dales. Sitting between Wharfedale and Harrogate, the AONB contains some of the most beautiful countryside Yorkshire has to offer. The landscape and valleys have been moulded down the centuries by the practices of agriculture, mining, quarrying, textiles and water provision as well as the formidable power of the pre-dissolution monasteries. The result is a complex historic environment with a great variety of man-made landscape features to complement the natural landmarks which already give the area such character. Nidderdale What makes up the Nidderdale AONB Whilst the central feature is the long, majestic dale of the River Nidd, the AONB stretches far beyond the valley of Nidderdale and its central town of Pateley Bridge. The western side is a remote and wild gritstone landscape with heather moorland that is important for wildlife and home to some of the most famous grouse shoots in the country. In contrast the eastern part of the AONB features a softer, more pastoral landscape with rolling farmland, traditional hay meadows rich in wildlife and sheltered river valleys. This part of the AONB is scattered with historic parks and gardens such as Hackfall Woods and Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal World Heritage Site. To the south is the Washburn Valley with four beautiful yet distinctive reservoirs and picturesque stone built villages.

How Stean Gorge is well-known as one of the best North Yorkshire attractions and with good reason. Featuring so much natural beauty, visitors can explore natural caves, walk through flowing ravines, climb up rocks, participate in a high-wire adventure, and more! Grab Your Hard Hat and Map At the ticket desk, you’ll be given a map to help you explore every nook and cranny of this natural hidden gem. We advise you to arrive in wellies and have a torch handy to help you explore the deep dark caves and tunnels. Grab your hard hat at the entrance and follow the trails around this leafy ravine. There are interpretation panels highlighting the history and interesting legends of the historic location. You can look down into the gorge and see the water flow over the unusual rock formations. Gorge walkers are often seen scrambling below too. The gorge limestone is so special that it is graded as a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest). The walk through the caves takes you past lots of attractions that are some of the most beautiful and unique parts of the Yorkshire Dales. The upper pathway is suitable for the timid adventurer, the lower are more challenging as they are uneven and occasionally slippery. So for older children it’s an exciting natural wonderland, this makes it the perfect family day out in Yorkshire and a great way to see a beautiful gorge completely created by nature! Along the way, you may encounter a large spider and even some lizards! These works of art are by iron sculptor Steve Stangermoor from Harrogate. Explore the Deep Dark Caves…. Switch your torch on. Trust the steely ‘snake’ by the wooden carved oak lion to take you down into the shallow water. This is where your journey into How Stean Tunnel begins… Follow the tunnel around the corner. Here’s an opportunity to whoop and holler and hear the echos! You’ll finally come out into the light. Return to the lion and follow the path towards the entrance ready for Tom Taylor’s Cave. Squeezing through the narrow cave you’ll eventually come out in the middle of the car park! Wildlife Watch Whilst on your adventure look out for: Brown trout swimming in the stream, bats hanging in the caves, birds in the trees, cave spiders (not dangerous), wild garlic, otters, deer, rare liverworts and ferns and fossils frozen in the rocks. Aslan the Lion Another sculpture on your journey is that of a lion. Not any lion but Aslan from “The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe” fame by C S Lewis. When the film “Prince Caspian” was released in 2008, to promote the film, Disney commissioned Marney Hall to design a garden at the National Exhibition Centre featuring Aslan in Narnia. The lion was carved by David Williams, from Buith Wells, using a chainsaw. After winning a gold prize at the exhibition, we took the opportunity to purchase the lion and placed him where he now proudly stands. He is an exceedingly well-made lion in solid oak and extremely heavy. Don’t forget! Wellington Boots or sturdy shoes you don’t mind getting wet if you going to go through How Stean Tunnel. A good strong torch to lit up your passage through the natural tunnels. 12 Months Free Visits The ticket price gives you 12 months free return visits so you can see the Gorge in every season. Also onsite: Glass floored Café - One of the Gorge’s unique features is an amazing glass floored café which cantilevers out over the gorge creating an amazing dining experience. Towns

Knaresborough is full of surprises, a warren of medieval streets and stone staircases that weave their way up and down the hill. The town centre is perched on the cliffs above the River Nidd and the imposing railway viaduct across the Nidd Gorge offers an amazing view to visitors as they arrive by train. What’s best about Knaresborough? The market place in the centre of the town offers a great place to enjoy a cup of tea or something delicious and home baked. On a Wednesday stalls fill the market place offering tasty produce, wholefoods, plants and flowers, as well as pretty much anything else you can imagine, in the ever-popular Knaresborough Market. At the base of the cliffs on which the town sits, you will find a delightful promenade that traps the sun in summer, with a coastal feel despite being more than 60 miles from the sea making a great place to enjoy an ice-cream or indulge in the tradition English pastime of ‘simply mucking about in boats’.

Boroughbridge, North Yorkshire has a thriving High Street with inviting cafes, shops, pubs and restaurants. With architecture and an air that sets it apart from the rest of the district, this town is a treat to explore and discover. The pretty cobbled Hall Square was once the home of fishermen; today you will find the Butter Market Museum, an eclectic display of local artefacts, showing the history of the town’s people. Away from the Dales, Boroughbridge is on the edge of the Vale of York. Where the hills are gentle and the patchwork of wheat fields and working farmland is lined with hedgerows that teem with wildlife. This area is a more gentle countryside compared to the rugged hills of North Yorkshire’s two national parks. The canal and River Ure offer the perfect setting for tranquil walks and picnic spots, an afternoon’s fishing or a relaxing boat trip. There is plenty of family cycling thanks to the flat local terrain and relatively quiet roads and for the cross-country cyclist this gentle landscape means you can quickly cover a lot ground along the rolling bridleways. Boroughbridge is a town of history with three ancient standing stones situated on the outskirts of the town. These are known as The Devil’s Arrows, based on the story that they were flung to earth by an enraged Lucifer in an attack on nearby Aldborough. The tallest Arrow is 22ft 6in, topping anything at Stonehenge. A leisurely walk to the next village of Aldborough, situated on the Roman town of Isurium Brigantum, will take you back to Roman times. Two spectacular mosaic pavements remain and there are more finds on display in the Museum. Equidistant between London and Edinburgh, and right in the heart of North Yorkshire, Boroughbridge was an important staging post offering travellers food, drink and shelter for the night. This tradition of hospitality is still very much alive in the town making it a great base to explore the area and it is within easy reach of Harrogate, York and Leeds too.
