Upon entering this Vietnamese Bistro, first of a kind in a country where delicious food is not necessarily thought of in the same line as wine, one is whisked off to another world. A world of good-natured propaganda where slogans are replaced by easy-going dietary advice such as “Mỗi ngày ta chọn mọt món ăn” (“Every day we chose a new dish”), an echo to “Mỗi ngày tôi chọn một niềm vui” (“Every Day I Choose a New Joy” by Trinh Cong Son, Vietnam’s most famous composer, songwriter and poet). All elements of design are locally sourced and produced by Vietnamese craftsmen and women, including the propaganda art mural. The menu, with its already famous various spring rolls, features simple, wholesome, yet incredibly flavourful food prepared with the best and freshest of ingredients. The originality lies not only in the composition of the dishes (think 100% Vietnamese ingredients, envision Vietnamese home cooking “redesigned” and stay well clear of fusion) but also in the presentation. Our rolls are cut into mouth-sized bites that make them easy to share and a pleasure to eat and are more reminiscent of sushi than the familiar large lumps of invisible food we have grown so accustomed to be served. The desserts are a blend of traditional and modern with Marou dark chocolate (Vietnam’s one and only) fondue, home-made soursop and sugar cane ice-cream and banana in crunchy sticky rice. Our wine list was composed by Vietnamese and French connaisseurs and all selections were made while sampling the menu with our own Chef along with other Vietnamese chefs. To discover the menu and its beautifully matched wine, one can opt for the Propaganda Wine and Food Discovery menus.

It comes as little surprise that the owner is an architect when you step into this cleverly renovated old villa. The decor is rustic and elegant at the same time, which is also true of the food. Despite its tucked-away location in the northernmost reaches of District 1, this is no secret hideaway: book ahead.

Selected from the finest Arabica and Robusta beans grown in local farms in Vietnam’s Central Highlands, Càfê RuNam’s coffee uses 100% pure and authentic beans and is roasted using technology and techniques from Italian coffee masters. At Càfê RuNam, the traditional drip brewing process with a “phin” – the coffee filter unique to Vietnam – is the preferred brewing method. Càfê RuNam offers six different blends of coffee and each type varies depending on the percentage of Arabica and Robusta beans used. Please note that more Robusta beans in a blend will result in a greater caffeine content as well as a fuller body. In each cup of “phin” coffee, there are 20-25g of coffee versus 8-10g for each shot of espresso. All of our blends are available to be sold for use at home or as gifts in 250g packages.

What began as a pioneering passion project has become one of Vietnam’s most-loved lifestyle brands, bringing together a diverse range of products, people and ideas in one space. What unifies L’Usine today, is a shared sense of respect for the past, a love for excellent design and a desire to create a community where like-minded people can get together. From the start we wanted to build a brand and a lifestyle that cherishes authenticity, champions quality and celebrates heritage in everything we do. From the building itself, to the bespoke hand-crafted furniture and each carefully curated brand we stock, we work hard to ensure they all tell a unique and authentic story. Thanks to this, we have become a hub for creativity and a platform for both established and upcoming designers from around the world and we’re honoured to be the go-to café and restaurant for both hip locals and savvy global travellers. The same pioneering sprit that inspired L’Usine, is still engine that powers the business and the brand today. We continue to scour the world to bring you the best there is on offer, to inspire and unite our community of like-minded people.

Call it the best of both worlds: over three storeys in the heart of downtown Saigon, TukTuk pairs sumptuous, innovative Thai cuisine with the ambiance of a chic contemporary bistro. Sleek and sophisticated from the ground floor to the rooftop terrace, its traditional Thai fare boasts a 21st-century twist, rich in spice and flavour, complemented by TukTuk's stylish black-and-white surroundings. Put the two together and you've got a unique contemporary fusion of East and West, celebrating culinary tradition and innovative design as one. Bangkok-born chef Saran Jittiboonruan has compiled a menu just long enough to interest any diner without overreaching the bistro’s boundaries, featuring a smart collection of traditional Thai fare as well as several modified dishes. Though the soups, salads and mains on offer cater primarily to carnivorous diners, the chef can make adjustments to turn these dishes into vegetarian meals. The beverage program, on the other hands, also includes a concise menu with traditional orange-hued Thai milk tea or an ice-cold Singha beer to the signature drinks with Thai originated ingredients. TukTuk is not only a popular vehicle in Thailand but a nation icon of the Golden land. Bringing TukTuk to downtown of Saigon, the owners attempt to come up with a Thai dish that any Saigon’s cosmopolitan residents can resist. Enjoy!

Drinks & Nightlife

Dark and smoky, this live jazz bar is unique in Ho Chi Minh – somewhere to listen to contemporary jazz with subtle Vietnamese influences thanks to the talented owner who plays several traditional instruments on stage. Sax n‘ Art is more expensive than most bars in the city, and some people are put off by the $5 entry free added to their first drink, but that is the price you must pay to listen to Vietnam’s best jazz band in a compact and personal space. The house band weaves between jazz standards and into some more avant-garde compositions, and many touring musicians have been known to frequent the club owned by Vietnam’s foremost jazz saxophone player. This bar is easy to find on Le Loi, not far from Ben Thanh Market, with live music every night of the week. Opening Hours: 19:00 – 24:00 (live music from 21:00) Address: 28 Le Loi, District 1 Tel: +84 (0) 8 3822 8472

Picture this: a Filipino band line dancing in Stetson hats and cowboy boots in a wooden, saloon type bar in Ho Chi Minh City. Sound interesting? Then you have to check out Seventeen Saloon: a two storey live music hall with rock and roll on both floors and a mostly Vietnamese crowd. Bands play all night at top volume so this isn’t the best place for quiet chat but if you’re in the mood for some U2, Bon Jovi and other heavy rock standards then this corner bar across the park from the famous New World skyscraper will give you an amazingly fun – if not slightly surreal – night out. This is an easygoing bar where waitresses are dressed up in sexy country and western garb and the bands play late into the night. Its location halfway between the backpacker part of town and the central tourist area means the foreigners who do make it here are always an eclectic and interesting bunch. Opening Hours: 19:00 – 02:00 (live music from 21:00) Address: 103A Pham Ngu Lao Street, District 1 Tel: +84 (0) 8914 0007

The Acoustic Bar in Ho Chi Minh is the venue of choice for Vietnam’s up and coming rock musicians. This is the place where legends never die and you can hear amazing renditions of – amongst others – Jimi Hendrix, The Doors and John Lennon. But it’s not limited to the classics; the international roster of musicians is free to rock on with anthems from any era. The place itself is part bar, part cafe, with plenty of sofas for chilling with a coffee in the early evening and standing room for when it heats up at night – there is no food served at The Acoustic Bar though so be sure to fill up beforehand. This place is packed practically every night with a pleasant mix of Vietnamese and foreigners so if you only have one night for live music in Ho Chi Minh we recommend The Acoustic Bar. You’ll have no trouble finding the bar, just look out for an artistically upturned VW Beetle to guide the way. Opening Hours: 18:00 – 24:00 (live music from 21:00, except on Sunday) Address: 6E1 Ð Ngo Thoi Nhiem, District 3 Tel: +84 (0) 8 3930 2239

War Remnants Museum One of the most talked-about exhibits are the ‘tiger cages’ in which the South Vietnamese government kept their political prisoners. These small cages are only 2.7m x 1.5m x 3m each and were sometimes used to keep up to 14 prisoners in. There is also a guillotine used by the French and the South Vietnamese to execute prisoners from opposing political groups. Brought to Vietnam by the French; the guillotine was last used in 1960. Also featured are grisly photos that show the disfigured bodies of locals who had prenatal exposure to strong pesticide and chemical sprayed, best known by the name ‘Agent Orange’. Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs believed that there were 500,000 children born with birth defects while as many as 4.8 million people were exposed to it from 1961 to 1971. The War Remnants Museum is in District 3, Ho Chi Minh City and is run by the government. It is open all year round from 07:30 to 17:00. A visit to this war museum is a disturbing experience for most people and may not be suitable for children (though they are allowed to enter). Built in 1909 in honour of the supreme Taoist god (the Jade Emperor or King of Heaven, Ngoc Hoang), this is one of the most spectacularly atmospheric temples in Ho Chi Minh City, stuffed with statues of phantasmal divinities and grotesque heroes. The pungent smoke of incense (huong) fills the air, obscuring the exquisite woodcarvings. Its roof encrusted with elaborate tile work, the temple's statues, depicting characters from both Buddhist and Taoist lore, are made from reinforced papier mâché. Built between 1877 and 1883, Notre Dame Cathedral enlivens the heart of Ho Chi Minh City's government quarter, facing Ð Dong Khoi. A brick, neo-Romanesque church with 40m-high square towers tipped with iron spires, the Catholic cathedral is named after the Virgin Mary. Interior walls are inlaid with devotional tablets and some stained glass survives. English-speaking staff dispense tourist information from 9am to 11am Monday to Saturday. Standing magnificently at the heart of Ho Chi Minh City is the Saigon Opera House, also known as Municipal Theater. Just a few blocks away from the Notre Dame Cathedral and Ho Chi Minh’s People committee, on the busy intersection of Dong Khoi and Le Loi, the building stands as one of the impressive sight in Saigon – both night and day. The Saigon Opera House was built in 1898 by Eugene Ferret following the “flamboyant” style of the French Third Republic. It was set to be around two meters higher than the land surface at the time, and equipped with two door layers, in order to prevent traffic noise. Everything is symmetrical from the outside in of the building. It is located on the city’s center axis, connecting the metro station and roundabout in front of Ben Thanh market. From further, the Opera House looks like a beautiful gigantic city gate. The building grandeur decors, from the entrance with stone-carved ornaments and statues to crystal chandeliers, shiny granite floor and many other details – all were imported directly from France. The oval auditorium, with 468 seats in three different classes, offers good view from every seat. It is also echo-free and therefore remains the sound inside the theater. The theatre is now been used as a host for many high profile events as well as cultural and entertainment activities of the city. Considered as national relic, the Opera House only opened to public during events and shows. Hence, while staying in Ho Chi Minh City, it is worthwhile to check for show schedule, grab a ticket and come early to discover this magnificent building.
