Exercise and well being

This local mountain has many paths up. It is suitable for various levels of walker, but not to be underestimated! Now popular as a mountain bike trail too.The main car park has a guide centre with information about the mountain, its ecosystems, and much more.

The closest beach to the house for a quick swim. Lifeguards on duty in the summer. Open sea views and dolphins sometimes visible especially as you walk back towards Aberdovey. The sandy beach links Tywyn and Aberdovey and is a favourite long walk.

My favourite beach n brunch destination

Now discovered by kite surfers, as well as walkers, sailors and swimmers! Miles of golden sandy beach, family friendly facilities, plenty of places to eat from fine dining to the local tasty fish n chips. Great boutique shops, clean public loos for sandy hands, a tourist office with information on the legends and stories of this fascinating coastal village.

Forest and waterfall beauty spot

A beautiful place to spend some time. Catch the steam train down and back from the village ( a short walk to the station). Waterfalls and a picnic bench at the top of the three falls for the family. The lower fall is accessible by wheelchair.

HIstoric steam train in forest and beach setting.

Our own steam train! Built to carry the prized Welsh slate to the coast, it was lovingly reconstructed in this century and is now one of the most popular stops on the holiday trail. Beloved of tots Thomas and friends make regular appearances. However it has many beautiful walks along the way, including Dolgoch falls (mentioned elsewhere) - get off and take a forest walk and catch it home later. Or chug to the beach. It is used by commuters regularly. An experience not to be misses. But always always finish with a large slice of cake or a local bottle of beer in the platform tea rooms. A national treasure that shows the pride and care of those who keep it running.

Wildlife and conservation

Ospreys, once extinct, return here every year. Learn about them with live, close-up screens, informative friendly volunteer staff, and walk the marsh boardwalk into this peaceful, stunning valley complete with grazing water buffalo! You will get hooked to the drama of the Osprey families live screening each summer as they battle their way across the globe from Senegal to this little valley 30 minutes from the cottage.

Local market town

Dolgellau is set on a broad river. One of the lesser known Snowdonian towns, it is quite unique and feels as if time has left it behind. It’s a fabulous place for cyclists, with many bike trails , and if you want mountain biking you have everything including the flat Mawddach Trail which follows an old railway line bed. It is also the nearest town to Coed y Brenin Mountain Bike Centre. This beautiful Snowdonian town is only 20 mins drive form the cottage, 60 mins cycle. An interesting fact at this time of mindfulness and peace: One of the last Carmelite nunneries is here with the nuns still living and working to create peace in the world, and they offer a retreat experience or simply to join them for a Sunday mass, guidelines permitting, so please call them first. It has its own music festival and is also the base for many of the Cadair Idris paths (see separate information on Cadair).
