Stories of a rich culture The Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen brings stories of the people who once lived on the shores of the Zuiderzee to life. See, hear, feel, taste and smell everyday life round the Zuiderzee as it was before the Afsluitdijk (the great IJsselmeer Barrier Dam) turned the former inland sea into what we now know as the IJsselmeer, in 1932. The Zuiderzee Museum focuses on the history, current situation and future of the region. Themes such as water, crafts and communities occupy centre stage. These stories are visualized the Outdoor Museum with its historic buildings, and in the Indoor Museum through thematic exhibitions. Outdoor Museum Walk a hundred years back in time along the cobbled streets of the Outdoor Museum. More than 140 historic buildings from around the former Zuiderzee form a complete village here. Watch the craftsmen at work, experience the daily life of yesteryear and enjoy the authentic atmosphere. Come and discover it! And don't miss the contemporary design presentations inspired by the life and work of the past. Become peckish after all that history? Then have a delicious freshly smoked fish at the fish smokehouse. You can also order a packed lunch when booking an entrance ticket. You can pick it up during your visit at the Amsterdamse Huis restaurant and enjoy it on one of the benches or one of the picnic sets scattered throughout the Museum. Indoor Museum The Indoor Museum is the treasure house of the Zuiderzee; here the various collections are presented with a modern approach. Dive into a Sea of Stories and experience life on the former Zuiderzee in this interactive exhibition. Also admire the large collection of historic boats in the Ships' Hall. Curious?
