There are only a few places in Tokyo to watch rakugo (comic storytelling), and this venerable Shinjuku theatre is one of them. First-timers should try the Saturday night performances, which cost just ¥500.

As a westerner with only a basic working knowledge of Japanese, I thought it might be fun to take in the bargain Saturday evening performances for 500 Yen. I'm glad I went, because rakugo is something that most tourists never get the chance to see, and this theatre has a great reputation. Not particularly large, I was lucky to get a ticket, despite getting in line a bit after nine; the floor seating filled and I had to sit on a pillow on the side gallery on the tatami. A little uncomfortable, but not too bad. A very funny performance, even though I had difficulty following parts of it. A very varied crowd, but all locals apart from myself. A foreigner tourist is more popular in "the Japanese who would like to entertain a foreigner tourist" more than himself in Shinjuku Suehiro bower for several minutes on foot from an east entrance in JR Shinjuku Station. There are a lot of visitors in twenties in thirties, too, so these days as well as an adult rakugo fan beyond forties are the entertainment space even a beginner can enjoy comfortably.

The Japanese "Yose" , it's different from Kabuki though, worth watching. 新宿三丁目名物「寄席」です。落語は新鮮な体験になりおすすめですよ！
