Katsushika Hokusai, a world-renowned ukiyo-e artist, was born in Honjo-Wari-Gesui (presently the Kamezawa area in Sumida Ward, Tokyo) in 1760 and spent almost the entire 90 years of his life in Sumida Ward where he created a large number of masterpieces. In honor of this outstanding artist whom many local citizens are truly proud of, the Sumida Ward opened the Sumida Hokusai Museum on November 22, 2016 as a base to invigorate the local community and contribute to the region’s industry and tourism.

If you’re an ukiyo-e fan (woodblock prints and art), it’s time to get excited. The much-anticipated Sumida Hokusai Museum, dedicated to world-renowned Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai, opened last November 2016. In addition to the collected works of Sumida Ward, there are materials handed down from high-profile researchers including the Peter Morse Collection and Narazaki Muneji Collection.

The permanent exhibits consist of seven areas. It starts with “1. Sumida and Hokusai”, a section that explains Hokusai and his birthplace “Sumida”, followed by six other areas (“2. Study Painting” to “7. Nikuhitsu-e (hand-painted artworks)”) divided by his main pseudonyms. Closed days Mondays (on the following day if it falls on a national holiday or a compensatory holiday), year-end holidays (Dec. 29, 2016 – January 1, 2017) The museum may close on a temporary basis besides the dates above.
