Fantastic walkabout with many geothermal features. Just up the road, is a large boiling mud pool (which you can view for free).

The Hot & Colds pools are here not too far from the Lady Knox geyser. Another free geothermal soak and not as busy or touristy are Kerosene creek. Access is via an unsealed road which isn't always kind to small city vehicles.

Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland is a spectacular showcase of New Zealand’s most colourful and unique geothermal elements sculpted by thousands of years of geothermal activity.

This is another geothermal park experience in Rotorua, but by far the most popular, probably because access from the highway is easier. My highlights are Lady Knox geyser (although this is induced and only occurs once a day at 10.15am) the Champagne pool and Devil’s bath. You experience crater lakes, bubbling hot mud and hot springs. Bear in mind, if you’ve done Waimangu you probably don’t need to also see Waiotapu as the natural features are so similar. On a hot day it can be very hot looking at “hot” things as there’s not a lot of shade in trees. You only need to allow about 45 minutes for the geyser, go early to get a good seat and another 1.5 hours for the walk around Waiotapu. Note that you must get a ticket from the visitor centre, then drive back to the geyser. After that, you drive back to the visitor centre for your self-guided walk through the park - grab a map. I quite like the gift shop, but the cafe doesn’t offer very healthy food options. If you decide not to do this, don’t fret there is another geyser here in Rotorua much bigger and also goes off naturally. This is at Te Puia and I will talk more about that further below. Drive time from 360 Clayton Road - takes approx 25 minutes NO CASH ACCEPTED More info here: www.waiotapu.co.nz
