Drive up to the Visitors Center at Mauna Kea. Most rental cars will not allow you to go up beyond that point (4WD only). They have bus tours that take you up in late afternoon so you can see the sunset over Kona. Take some warm clothes, at that elevation it can get cold! There are rangers who offer stargazing at night.

The views are stunning and the vastness of the island can really be experienced when you are on top of the world. This is the only place in the world where you can see snow and a live volcanic lava flow in the same day! Make your trip and epic one and experience it all!
The volcano! Info on overdrive. Cool gift shop, self serve hot chocolate 'cause it's cold up there.
