If you want to rent canoes, Hootentown is only about 10 minutes away. They drop off at Shelvin Rock and float back to Hootentown. The Finley River flows into the James about an hour down from here. However, the Finley isn't great to float as there's shallow places throughout. It's really great for wading and playing in. : )

A little rough around the edges, this is the local go-to for rafting, canoe rentals, etc. Make a reservation based on your group size to rent rafts and canoes. Parking is limited at their office, but there is overflow across the street at the boat launch. They will provide life jackets and a trash bag to keep the water clean. They will drive you and your equipment out to the launch point and you will float right back to them at the end, easy peasy!

Can call to reserve on busy weekends. There is the 4 mile and the 7 mile. Typically the 4mile takes 2-3 hours to complete. The 7 take 4-5hours.

We use Hootontown for all our canoe rental needs. They are great at getting us in the water for a great time on the James River.
