This winery, built in English Gothic style in Calistoga in 1888, seems like a castle right out of childhood storybooks, but it is best known for capturing first place among Chardonnay wines in the memorable blind-tasting contest in 1976 known as the Judgment of Paris [Tasting fees from $45 per person]
Voted one of the most beautiful wineries in Napa. With its ivy-covered, English Gothic-style stone castle carved into the hillside, this family-owned winery just off the Silverado Trail, known for its cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay, boasts towering trees, a stunning Chinese garden, and a peaceful lake.
Calistoga- Chateau Montelena Winery- is the one that was famous for winning the wine competition in France for their chardonnay that put the Napa Valley on the map. Beautiful lake out back and really good wine. You might want to make a reservation. (We left the really fun movie “Bottle Shock” on the counter for you since it’s all about this winery!)
Chateau Montelena is a Napa Valley winery most famous for winning the white wine section of the historic "Judgment of Paris" wine competition. Chateau Montelena's Chardonnay was in competition with nine other wines from France and California under blind tasting. All 11 judges awarded their top scores to either the Chardonnays from Chateau Montelena or Chalone Winery, another California wine producer. A fictionalized version of Chateau Montelena's historic victory was featured in the 2008 film Bottle Shock.
